Updated on July 22, 2015

What are pigfish?

The pigfish is a small member of the grunt family. These colorful fish are marked with a bluish upper and a silver lower body, with a series of stripes on the sides and bands on the snout and head. Each scale has a blue center which is outlined in copper or orange.

Pigfish range from Massachusetts through the Gulf of Mexico.

Baits and Fishing Techniques for Catching Pigfish

Pigfish are often found around piers, bridges, natural reefs, rough bottoms, and other structure.

Popular baits for catching pigfish include bloodworms, shrimp, crabs, clams, squid, and synthetic baits.

Pigfish Table Quality

Although small in size, pigfish make excellent table fare. Small pigfish are usually scaled, and cleaned in the same manner as other small panfish.

Pigfish are usually served fried, baked, grilled, steamed, or included in chowder.
