How to Plan the Perfect Puppy Shower

Updated on December 13, 2014

Planning a Puppy Shower is just FUN!

A Puppy-Shower to Celebrate a NEW Puppy!

A what? Yep! A Puppy Shower.

Well, this may sound strange to you but a puppy shower is a great way to introduce your new fur baby to all your friends and family. A shower for a new little furry bundle of joy is smart and actually makes sense if you think about it.

We have wedding and baby showers and they are a huge deal because they signify a part of a new life. It's like a new chapter in our lives because our lives will be changed forever.

So now take a moment and consider adding a new puppy to your family, it is also a new beginning and a huge undertaking. Whether it is a human baby or a furry puppy, you are responsible for this little bundle of joy for their entire life.

And the bond begins... Isn't that worth celebrating?

My Puppy Shower Experience

Oh what fun it is to plan a Puppy Shower. I had this opportunity to do just that when a close friend of mine added a new puppy to her family. A Puppy Shower may sound strange to many of you. But, actually puppy showers are extremely trendy and quite cool. However, this was not my reason for organizing and planning this surprise puppy shower.

My friend Melanie is a true dog lover. She has so much love to give and has chosen to share this love with fur babies. I don't believe she has spent one moment of her adult life without sharing it with a dog. Unfortunately, the rainbow bridge comes too soon for dogs.

Mel's love of her life was Elvis. Well, besides her husband Joe, of course! Anyway, Elvis was a 120 lb. white lab. Yep... He was a BIG boy. To provide a bit more detail about Elvis, he was a gentle giant, a true gentleman and loving and devoted family member. Rainbow Bridge came too early for this sweet and loving soul. Mel and Joe spent seven wonderful years of their life with Elvis. But I guess it doesn't really matter how many years you have, it's never enough.

After his passing, my friend had a terrible time moving on. Her heart was truly broken and just seeing her like this broke my heart.

We all tried to cheer her up and talk her into getting a new puppy. She kept saying no, that she was not interested in getting a new dog. Then one day she changed her mind and decided to take a trip to a breeder, which her cousin recommended. I think you know the rest of the story. Well she fell in love again, but this time with a little girl, who she named "Emma Zaphia."

Tips to Plan the Perfect Puppy Shower

Puppy Shower Tips

As far as, planning a puppy shower, there is truly no limit to how cute things can get.

There are no rules which makes planning a Puppy Shower so fun. Anyone can plan one and the guest of honor does not need to be limited to a puppy. How about an adult rescue dog. You can plan a puppy shower for yourself. Any reason to have a party is enough for me.

First you will want to create your guest list and decide if other puppies are invited or only the guest of honor. Please remember if other fur babies are invited, it is important to remember the new puppies immune system is weak and should not be exposed to illness at such a young age.

Okay, now it's time to get dog-gone creative.

Make your Own Puppy Shower Invitations

You can find some Puppy Shower Invitations online or make your own.

I made my own which was really fun. I found a picture of Mel's new puppy on the breeders website and got permission to use it on the puppy shower invitation. I found a brush on Photoshop for a paw print and used it to embellish the invitation.

Think who, what, when for the specific details you will need to include on your invite.

  • What:
  • Describe the Celebration
  • Who:
  • Guest of Honor for this celebration
  • Where:
  • Address of location, include a phone number and directions
  • When:
  • date and time, also indicate if this party is a surprise
  • RSVP information:
  • phone number or email address for guests to respond to

That is the basic information you will need to include for your invitation.

Simple Directions

1. Use a piece of card-stock, (heavier paper which is labeled card-stock) I like to use white, because it is easier to find and I use color from the printer to enhance the invitation. You can plan on getting 2 invitations per page. I created a 8.5 x 5.5 sized by printing two per page and cutting the card-stock in half. You could also purchase blank cards and envelopes.

  • Construct a folded card in the shape of a puppy item such as, bones, fire hydrant or paw print and print the party details on the inside.

2. You can design your invitation on any software. You can even use word. Find an image and paste or insert it into your document.

  • You can use a paw stamp or other design and stamp onto your invitation to create something cute.

3. Format your words on the page and type your info. Limit your colors to two or three colors and fonts should be limited to only two.

  • Consider threading the card with ribbon for a really cute look.

The possibilities are endless for creating an adorable invitation.

Decorating for a Puppy Shower is not different then any other shower. Other than keeping it a dog or puppy theme. Which is really fun. Finding canine related party supplies is actually pretty easy. I have included some ideas right here. Look for paw prints, bones or anything dog related.

  • Create a centerpiece shaped in a fire hydrant filled with puppy toys. The fire hydrant can be used to store the puppies toys in the future.
  • Using inexpensive dog bones and decorating them can be cool. Imagine using bones to indicate place settings at a table with the guests name on it. You could also use painted bones to decorate a table. Remember these are not edible to the puppy once paint is applied.
  • Continue creating your party environment with paw print balloons, ribbon, plates, napkins etc. Once you get going, it is easy.
  • Find some cute fabric and make your own tablecloth. You can adorn it with painted biscuits, ribbon, pom poms, etc.

Let your imagination soar.

Here a something you can whip up for your canine guests.

I make this for my dogs and they love it.

16 oz. plain yogurt (Non-Fat is healthier)

1 small jar of fruit baby food (Apple, Pear, Banana or Peach)

1 T peanut butter

1 T honey

Add all ingredients to a bowl and blend together. Pour into small paper cups (3 oz size) and freeze. When you serve it to your dog, you can push it up and hold it for them or place it on the ground and let them work on it themselves.

@tricomanagement: Thanks for visiting. My Scottie "Duncan" just crossed Rainbow Bridge this past March. I was so sad for a very long time but I have his memories forever. And last month we got another one, Sully (3 Month Old Scottie) joined Brodie (2 year old Scottie) and our family. We are so happy but we will always miss Duncan.

I have to admit, the idea of throwing someone a puppy shower never crossed my mind - the words "puppy shower" tend to make me think of something for which I need to get a floor mop! - but all these fun ideas you've lined up, not to mention the story of Elvis and Emmie and Mel, tend to make me think this is a really terrific idea. After all, dogs are family members, right? A puppy shower sounds just about right.
