Quail birds - hobby, income, remedy...
Quails- With Us For Centuries
I want to write about the quail birds, my favorite pet, hobby. remedy and lately, income.. to explain what is quail for a retired person.
Mainly i will talk about the most common quail , the coturnix japonica, common domesticated japanese quail , very pleasant for raising.
The first written records of domesticated quail are from Japan, dating from the twelfth century. These birds were initially developed for song. It is recorded that a Japanese Emperor obtained relief from tuberculosis after eating quail meat, and this led to selection of domestic quail for meat and egg production in Japan in the latter part of the nineteenth century (Howes, 1964). By 1910, the Japanese quail in Japan were widely cultured for their meat and eggs. Between 1910 and 1941, the population of Japanese quail increased rapidly in Japan especially in the Tokyo, Mishima, Nagoya, Gifu and Toyohashi areas. This period also represented a time of imperial expansion in Japanese history and domesticated Japanese quail were established in Korea, China, Taiwan an d Hong Kong, and later on spread to Southeast Asia.
Egyptians and Israelians trapped large quantities of Japanese quail for meat.
In Europe they are apreciated delicatesse and lately are considered for healing properties.
So what is quail, this delicate singing bird, but just a meat for so many...

My experience with quail birds.
Because of my constant lack of calcium and inability of my organism to absorb calcium from pills I had to consult a "green" health doctor, which did prescribe me some healthy shop product, precisely pills with quail eggshell. The results where slow and expensive, so I did decide to raise few of them, just for an experience. Now I ate the eggs and the shells I do incorporate in the vinegar used in salads.(click the photo)
The results did show up, and since I am a quail fan, even if I never did grow more than 40-50 birds.
Later forgetting about the health issues, I just did enjoy the culinary experiences, with the meat and eggs, they where working anyway.
I would persuade everybody to consume 2-3 fresh quail eggs per day, especially at my age.
Never mind, what I want to tell, raising this lovely birds it is a joy itself. They sing beautifully, they amuse you with their behavior, (quite alike humans) and the chicks... they are just wonderful, unforgettable.
My neighbor did put 4 eggs under a hen, and the resulting 3 chicks did grow up with the other chickens, never leaving their "mother"...isn't is amazing? These birds are very good to flight, what feeling kept them with the chickens and the hen?
I love them, the only problem is what I could not solve is what to do with the oldish birds, when you have to change them... because to eat them, it is not an option.
Later my egg production did grow, so i did sell them to the 2 small hotels. So what is quail for me? joy, remedy and income.
Income and Hobby
How i make money with the quails
As i told, i am keeping quails for my healthy diet. But because i really love them, and i would like other people having them too, i just made some pretty small cages, gave me the DIY hobby too,and i sell them with a small quail family, mostly for parents who desperately are looking for a pet who is not hairy, or dirty, or tie the family to the house. The quails are perfect pets.
It is small money, but pleasant way to do it.
This cute are the quail chicks...

Secrets About Keeping Quails
Unexpected winter experience
I am so shocked as my quails are , no doubt, about this very severe winter in Scotland. Every day i was worried about them, how they will survive the cold, especially at night. The sites about quails are telling nothing or giving the +16 C degrees as min temperature to keep the quails.
And guess what? My quails not only look better than ever, healthy feathers and even weight gained, but they are laying eggs, continuously, obviously with the light on at least 15 hours per day. I found frozen eggs, once, what is a waste, but otherwise everything turned out all right.
I am so anxious to share such an information about the quails, so bye, and hurry to get some of this wonderful birds, for the whole family's benefice. Quails are surviving at -7 C degrees, at least. I did not got the possibility to bring further this experience - thank God!.
