Note though that raising turkeys for meat doesn't simply mean letting them out to pasture and letting nature run its course. Turkeys need care just like any other poultry animal in order for them to turn into delicious and meaty confections at the dinner table. That being said, following are the top five things individuals must consider to raise delicious turkeys.

1. Consider the Breed

Farmers can choose between raising domestic turkeys and Wild ones. More often than not, the best choice here would be Heritage as they are the ones with the best tasting meat. Wild turkeys are typically reserved for petting purposes since they are more docile and intelligent than their domestic counterparts. There are currently different types of Heritage turkeys today starting from the White Midget to the Bronzed turkeys so make sure to pick one depending on the quality of their meat. Raising multiple breeds at the same time is also possible but can get complicated for first-timers.

2. Feeding and Watering

The good news is that the market is currently home to feeds specially made for turkey farmers. These feeds contain all the necessary vitamins and minerals the turkey needs to grow healthy and fat. Observe the bird though and make sure they are acting normal. Turkeys that are acting out of character may have a problem with their health and need special attention. Note that when it comes to feeding and watering, even the placement of their feeders plays an important role. For one thing, the feeders must have spaces of around 4 centimeters and should always be clean. Turkeys consume lots of water so make sure there's always fresh liquid available for them. To fatten up the turkeys, start feeding them more calories and carbohydrates. This diet will also help the hens lay more eggs.

3. Avoid Stress in Turkeys

Sometimes, the turkeys may turn on each other, resorting to cannibalism. This can happen if the fowls aren't happy with their environment, causing them to have problems. The most common stress reasons for turkeys include insufficient food supply, water supply and not enough accommodations to keep them happy. When rearing turkeys for meat, the turkeys must have ample space to move about so that they wouldn't feel threatened on each other's territories. Unclean surroundings may also trigger stress attacks on turkeys.

Of course, those aren't the only things to take into account when raising turkeys for meat. When it comes right down to it though, the proper care for the turkey depends on what specific breed it is. This is why farmers should take the time to understand exactly what breed of turkey they are rearing and whether they intend to stay organic or use different mixes for feeding.
