Recycled Cardboard Box Cat Playhouses

Updated on November 9, 2012

When life brings you a Cardboard Box - make a Cat Playhouse

Do Not throw out your Cardboard Boxes when you can create some fun for your Cats. Forget spending hundreds of dollars on Cat Trees and Climbers when it can cost you nothing to provide them with some fun. It is basically a win win - You get to keep the product that comes in your Cardboard Box and your Cats get to play and be entertained with what you would have normally just tossed away. I have 6 Cats living in my home and this is one thing I do all the time to keep them entertained. So let me show you how to give them some fun that will not cost you anything, but a Recycled Box.

That is my Cat Sticker in one of the many Cardboard Cat Houses I have created over the years.

Things you need to create your Cat's Cardboard Playhouse

Cats - It always helps to have one or more available to play in your playhouse - That is the point right?

Cardboard Box or Two - Depending on how big you want your House you can use one box or multiple boxes.

Box Cutter or Knife - You want a good cutting tool so you can cut out Doors and Windows.

Tape - Duct Tape or Packing Tape will work.

Crayons or Markers - Having a plain box can be boring - adding some color and designs adds to the fun and having some kids on hand also helps with this part of the fun.

Yarn or String - Adding toys hanging inside the Playhouse adds to the excitement for your Feline Friends.

Catnip - This is optional, but gives the cats a private area to get "High and Frisky" - It is ok - it's Legal.

Here is my latest Cardboard Box Playhouse I made for my Cat Gang

I made this one with 2 Boxes as you can see - 2 levels of play are always better than one.

I taped the bottom box closed nice and secure. I cut a hole on the top of the bottom box and one on the bottom of the top box so they lined up and they had a way to get from the bottom to the top. I then taped those together securely. Then I cut out a front door and left the flap as a doormat or a way I can close it if I wanted to. I cut out window holes in the front and back and on the second level in the back I made a secret exit for easy escape. I added some fun color and signs like "No Dogs Allowed" I have 3 of them too.

Oh and I also used some of the cut pieces of Cardboard and attached them to Yarn and hung them from the top of the boxes so that they hung on the inside for the cats to play. You will want to add them before taping the box closed - I stuck it inside and left some yarn outside the top and taped it down to be secure.

It is funny to see the cats peek their head out of the top where I made a fun cartoon cat body. They love it and play in it all the time.

Martha Stewart thinks Cardboard Cat Playhouses are "A Good Thing"

Of course Martha is always creative and this Cardboard Cat Playhouse is just that. So it is a bit more fancy than mine with that roof and all, but I enjoyed the freedom of my design.

The good thing is Martha has provided a Template for this Playhouse that you can make following her Step by Step Instructions or you can have more fun like I did and create one from your imagination.

Best Part of having a Cardboard Cat Playhouse:

You can Toss them if they get soiled or scratched up to the point of no repair and make a new one.

Here are some of my Cats checking out a Cardboard Box

There is just something about Cardboard the cats love. This is just an open box my cats B-lined for. As you can see Cyber made his way in and is relaxing while Sushi, Scar and Fang look on and await their turn to play.

So save all your Boxes for the Cats and not the Garbage Man

It is not hard at all to create a fun Playhouse for your Cats using what would ordinarily get tossed out to garbage. With just a little imagination and some simple tools your cats will be having a great time. Your playhouse can be as simple or extravagant as you would like it to be. You can make them a new one as often as you like so it keeps things fresh. Just have fun with it and your Furry Babies will Thank You. Christmas, Birthdays and UPS & Fed Ex deliveries just got even more exciting - u get the goods - the Cats get the Box.

Check out these Fun Cardboard Cat Playhouses

These are just too much fun - A Plane, A Fire Truck, A Pink Cadillac and a Tank. Can you just see your Cat playing in those? How Funny.

They come shipped completely flat and ready to be assembled.

Blessed again by a Squid Angel. Our cats have always loved boxes, and one or more usually occupy some space in our home. And I've tried to make castles and house out of them, but I was never good as good at it as you've been. Would like to see more larger (Polaroid module or Text with Big Picture) images of your cats. The one where they are inspecting a box is great, but it's very dark. I hope you have more. It would really liven up the lens. Good enough for a blessing as it is anyway.

@Ramkitten2000: Thanks for stopping by - my cats love them and they also love brown grocery bags - I usually get them at the store if available just so I can have some free cat toys after I unload the groceries. I love FREE toys!! lol

I think the cat fun house you made is better than Martha's! This is a great lens, and I love the photo montage of your furry family. My cats used to love playing with, in, and on boxes. They'd make a run for it, dive into the box, and send it--with them inside--flying across the floor. And they did this even when they were elderly kitties.
