Rhodesian Ridgeback

Updated on December 01, 2016

Rhodesian ridgeback (sometimes called African lion hound) is a strong, muscular hound used for hunting in southern Africa.

The Rhodesian ridgeback stands from 24 to 27 inches (60 to 68 cm) tall at the shoulder and weighs from 65 to 75 pounds (29 to 34 kg).

Its short, glossy coat is tan, sometimes tinged with red. Along the back is a ridge of hair, which grows in the opposite direction from the rest of the coat. The high-set ears hang close to the head, and the long, tapering tail is carried in a slight upward curve.

The Rhodesian ridgeback is probably descended from a half-wild South African dog, which also has a ridged back.
