Scarlett O'Hairy -- What a Pretty Girl

Updated on October 11, 2014

Meet Scarlett O'Hairy!

Scarlett O'Hairy is a long-haired orange and white cat. She's absolutely beautiful. Just look at her.

Scarlett's favorite things are cat treats and sleeping. She is a champion sleeper but an even more talented cat treat eater. She even stands on her hind legs and takes the tiny morsels from my fingertips. She never bites. Well, rarely.

Here's Scarlett lounging on a TV tray. Because she can.

Peggy, Giver of Cat Treats

I have opposable thumbs and Scarlett doesn't

I have come to believe that I was put here to open cat treat bags. After all, I have opposable thumbs, and Scarlett, Queen of the Condo, does not.

I can rip the top off a bag of cat treats, discard it, gently grasp either side of the cat treat bag and pop open the bag, reach in or pour out cat treats till the cows come home, and then seal the zip bag with the slight pressure of two fingers it requires.

Scarlett O'Hairy can not.

Rescue Cat or Beauty Queen?

When my daughter and I went to the Denver Dumb Friends to pick out a new cat, we didn't know we were going to pick Scarlett out, but there she was. Sitting in her wire cage all prim and proper. Not yet a year old. Still a kitten.

We signed up to look at her right away because next to the other boys and girls hanging out there that day, she was a movie star. The others cats where fine, just fine, but a few looked like alley cats in from the street for a hot meal then "I'll be on my way again, ma'am."

We thought someone else would snap up this furball named Scarlett before us, but if we could just touch that luscious soft hair and pet her a little, well, that would be okay. That would be enough. Turns out, we were first in line that Sunday morning and by the time we had signed the adoption papers and a check, the whiteboard with her name on it had five or six names under ours. Scarlett was popular.

Scarlett -- She Came That Way

But We Gave Her Name a Little Help

When we adopted Scarlett, that was her name. And it really did suit her, so she got to keep it. Of course like many other pet owners, that wasn't enough. She soon became Scarlett O'Hairy. She looks like a Southern belle, don't you think?

But I often call Scarlett "chicken leg" or "miss priss" or "Miss Scarlett."

My son used to call Scarlett "Rat Jr." because he called another cat we had "Rat." Scarlett was younger, thus the Junior moniker.

Favorite things to do with Scarlett O'Hairy

We are slugs together

As I mentioned earlier, Scarlett is an expert napper. Like most cats, Scarlett sleeps a good part of the day away. When I watch TV, Scarlett likes to lay in my lap. I'm not sure how closely she follows the show or movie that's on but she's my buddy.

And as shown in the photo, Scarlett loves a good tail chase. Check below for a link to a chase in action.

A few of Scarlett O'Hairy's favorite things

As I mentioned, Scarlett loves a good cat treat. She would eat just cat treats and not her food if I let her.

Some days she stands by the kitchen cabinet if I'm in the kitchen and meows, looks at me, rubs against the door, meows, looks at the door. You get the idea. She loves cat treats.

I forgot to mention Scarlett's other hobby...

she loves to shed!

And speaking of shedding... - help with the deshedding and keep your cat cool

Scarlett likes simple things, like a string. I pull it. She stalks it, chases it, pounces on it. Then she takes one end of the string in her mouth and drags it away.

Scarlett's Bad Teeth

A Visit to the Vet

Poor Scarlett. Today (November 21, 2011) Scarlett is at the vet's office.

One day last week, Scarlett was being super clingy. She sat next me, meowed at me, I petted her, fed her treats. Nothing really helped. So, as I was petting her I looked in her mouth. She has had a black tooth for a while but I noticed it had a sore above it on the gum. So, I took her for a checkup last week. The car ride was interesting as it would be if you only rode in the car once a year or less.

The vet said Scarlett needed to have at least three teeth pulled. Maybe more. Ouch. She is there now after a night of not eating. She really was not happy about that this morning. I had to turn and face the wall so she wouldn't see me eating my sausage and toast. Poor girl.

I pick her up about 4:30 so will post then on how she fared. Just fine, I hope.

Update: Scarlett did not have her dental work last week because the drill broke. Sad face. She has to go back this week. We will update you when she's all done.

The latest: Scarlett had her rotten teeth pulled Wednesday. It's now Friday and she's doing fine! Yay! When I brought her home she was still wobbly from the anesthesia, but that wore off over night. The only mishap was that she "almost" made it to the litter box but in this case, "almost" only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades, as the saying goes.

Oh well. She's worth it. She ate wet food yesterday and seemed to want her dry food so I chopped it up so it was crumbly. She ate as much of that as I'd give her. Today she can have her normal diet so I'm sure she will enjoy her treats once more! I'm sure she'll feel so much better too with the bad teeth gone.

What a beautiful cat and creative name. We got our cat Ghost from the Humane Society and we have also added to her name. She is now Lady Ghost Whispurr and she is also a champion napper. I like to emulate her as much as possible. She told me to tell you, you are very wise to realize that your main purpose in life is to open treat bags. Some people take a long time to realize this.

Our current cat is a small gray and white cat named Alex (although she's a girl). She came from the shelter, but quickly adapted to being royalty. She's never been interested in chasing her tail, which is lucky, because she doesn't have one! Like Lady Gaga, she was born that way. She loves one of our dogs, and tolerates the other. Interestingly, she's hooked on the very same cat treats as your Scarlett--Whiskas Temptations. If anyone so much as steps into the kitchen, she's there, insisting on a treat! Loved this lens. Scarlett is beautiful and talented!

Yes, I love cats! Scarlett should meet my cat Kisser. We both live in or near Denver as you said the Dumb Friends League - where I used to volunteer. Nice lens.

Scarlett O'Hairy is a very pretty baby. Did you ever tell her that she doesn't have opposing thumbs? Cinnamon gets very prissy when we point out what she thinks are her shortcomings. Very cute lens.

Scarlett O'Hairy is the true southern belle. I bet the name of the other cat in which she's rolling around in the sun is Rhett. Am I right?? Scarlett can ride with my magic-carpet cat, Daffodil, any time she wants. Daffodil says," Joyce, please lensroll me in w/ Scarlett." So I shall.
