Why My Dog is Smarter Than Me

Updated on December 19, 2012

Meet Penny!

Penny is an English Springer Spaniel with the gift of melting hearts. Everywhere she is, people around her just have to stop and pet this loveable, huggable pup. With her "perma-wag" tail and her loving personality, it's hard not to give in to all her pleas.

As you can tell, Penny has me wrapped around her paw. She has figured out what she has to do to get what she wants, without being a nuisance about it and has got me thinking that she's much smarter than me!

Reason #1: Threatening the Toilet

She knows what she needs and exactly how to get it!

One day I found my dog just about to drink from the toilet. She had her head in the toilet, inches away from the disgusting fluids inside. I yelled "Penny" and she quickly backed up and walked over to me. I checked her water bowl, which was empty of course. I filled the water bowl and went on with my day.

After this event, whenever my thirst-hungry dog wants more water, she threatens the toilet. She never drinks from it, thank goodness. She will simply look at the toilet, look at me, then back to the toilet. Apparently this is the way a dog gets the attention of her owner to fill the water dish AGAIN! By the way, I fill her water dish quite a few times a day, English Springer Spaniels are notorious for loving water!

I don't always know what I need. I will go through life with my head in the clouds until I realize that something is missing. It's usually my brain. I have yet to figure out how to get what I need from life.

Reason #2: Pawing for Attention

She knows how to get people to do whatever she wants!

Penny is well-known for her hugs, but even more well-known for her pawing. She will paw at me to get attention whenever she feels lonely, and I respond accordingly. Petting and talking to her, just like she likes.

If we are nowhere near a door and she needs to go outside to do her duties, she will paw at the air in the same motion as she does for the door.

She has cues for everything and knows what works best!

I can learn from her. I am very passive and don't want to step on any toes. I have a hard time making decisions, especially when it affects others around me.

For My Lap Dog

Penny likes to get up on the furniture and on me. She's much too big and hairy for this to work! So, a pet bed is perfect for her. A warming bed is even better! You'd think that dogs like to keep cool, but not my dog. She will actually fall asleep in front of the heater!

Reason #3: Love Unconditional

She will always be at my feet, no matter what!

We picked Penny from a litter of eight puppies. She stood out to us because she was so quick to curl up on our feet and snuggle in our arms. She loves unconditionally, and that's just what our family needed.

This 30 pound dog seems to think that she's a lap dog. Penny will climb up on my lap all the time just to feel the love.

Penny is always at my feet. She will follow me around wherever I go and is loyal to the end. Pictured to the right, she is laying at my feet while I type along at Squidoo!

I love my family and will always be there for them. I don't know if Penny has me beat on how much love she shows, but I have definitely learned something from her. To always love and know how to be loved.

Reason #4: Excited about the Small Things - She is happy no matter what!

This is her absolute favorite toy! It's just a small laser light, but it makes her tail wag and her whole body shaking. She will chase this thing all over the house until she flops down on the ground exhausted!

She knows that we keep the light in the kitchen cupboard. Whenever she wants to play, she will sit in the kitchen staring at the cupboard until someone gets it for her. Who knew that such a small thing would be so much fun!

Find joy in the small things!

Reason #5: Patient

She will take the good, the bad, and the ugly!

Penny is very patient with my children. They like to dress her up, tackle her, lock her in closets, and pull on her hair. She's never acted out or responded negatively. Penny will still play with them and do whatever is asked of her.

Pictured at the right is Penny and my two sons dressed for Halloween. This was her first time getting any sort of clothing on, even though she didn't like it, she stayed for the camera and went trick-or-treating all night with my kids.

I get irritated. I don't wait for people to do things the right way, I just do it for them. I don't like to take guff from anyone and am extremely stubborn. I could learn a few things from my smart dog!

I think my springers are also smarter than most people. My Springers sure have me wrapped around their paw. I love the English Springer breed.
