The Germans have always fielded a strong team at the World Cup. Only Brazil and Italy have won more often, and when the Germans do not win they usually finish near the top.

Sound anything like the Rottweiler? Rotties are strong, and when they do compete they usually finish first or near the top.

These powerful descendents of Roman cattle herding dogs, closely related to those giant dogs that fought in war, are now one of the most popular dog breeds found around the world. They are excellent family watch dogs, and when they are working cattle the keep the herd together during the day and guard them during the night.

It is no wonder that they developed into police dogs, war dogs, and even dogs for personal protection.

Rotties are big, just like the German team members at the World Cup. Most of them weigh in at 50 to 60 kilos (about 110 to 130 pounds) and they are also tall.

If you like the names from the World Cup participants do more reading! Here are a few great choices:

As soon as you have chosen a name for your new Rottie, be sure to buy a new name tag that also shows your cell phone. I ordered one of these spike collars for my dog thought and it makes her look even more like a World Cup Winner.

It also does great things for her rep on the beach!

More Tips For Your New Puppy

If you already have you new puppy, or will be picking him up soon, there are a few things you need to keep in mind.

1. Since your dog will be so big, you need to make sure you socialize him when still young and obedience train him so that you will be able to handle him properly.

2. Rottweilers do well when trained as personal protection dogs (Schutzhund) and also excel in herding competitions. Give your dog some activity and don’t make him lie around the house all day!

3. If you do not provide your dog with some sort of activity he is prone to obesity. Obese dogs develop arthritis, have breathing problems, and may become overheated. If you cannot exercise your dog enough, control his diet.

4. If you did not find a name you like here, be sure to check out my article on authentic German names. If you decide not to go for one of those, choose a name that has one or two syllables, is fairly easy to pronounce, and is not among the most popular dog names. After all, you want your dog to be unique, not the same as every other pup running around the dog park.

5. Rotts have a lot of energy and should not be locked up in a crate. If you need to use a crate for house training, do it with a cardboard box. Rottweilers are intelligent and easy to train and it will take less than a week.

6. Take lots of pictures. Your puppy will grow up fast and you will want to remember how small he was.

7. Have fun!!!

Although this breed of dog never has cropped ears, some puppies do need their ears taped so that they will fall into place correctly. This video gives directions for those who need it.

If you decide to get two puppies, make sure you have an alternative home in case they do not get along as they mature.

The best way to keep a large dog´s teeth clean is by giving a diet of raw meaty bones. There are many web sites and forums that give more information on feeding whole natural food--a raw dog food diet. If you are going to take a Rottie into your home spend a few minutes learning about this diet and do the best for your dog.

It could be worse. There is a player on the team by the name of Mario--how would you like to walk around with that name? Everyone would think of a small pot-bellied Italian man and his brother.

I don't know...around here, a rotty named Walter would get bullied at the dog park by a chihuahua named Sabre. Fun and interesting hub, though...voted up, interesting, and useful.
