The Care and Keeping of Betta Fish

Updated on March 2, 2012

Not Just a Pretty Face..

Most people have seen or heard of the betta fish. These fish are known as the easiest pets to take care of, as well as, the most solitary. Betta fish, however, have needs just like any other animal, though most people do not satisfy these needs, in order ot have a healthy, happy betta fish there are a few requirements.

There are many different types of betta fish. Most people go for the males, as they are larger and have more color on their bodies, than the female fish. The half - moon bettas (like the one pictured below) look like a cresent moon and are the most popular variety. Each variety has a different look, so be picky when choosing one

A Little Bit About Tanks..

Although betta fish are known for their resilience, they still need an adequate tank. This coffee pot - turned betta fish tank is okay to use, but it is generally considered more humane to give a betta fish, at least a 1 gallon tank. Think about it, if you were a fish wouldn't you want a good amount of space to swim around in?

Perfect for Bettas!

P.s. some betta fish can be introduced to a community tank and will do just fine around other fish.

So Your Betta Stops Eating...

My middle childs betta fish stopped eating about 2 weeks after we got it. We took it back to the pet store and we were told that our betta had stomach problems. We now feed him 2 freeze - dried worms (they're really tiny) a day. He's back to normal and is healthier than ever!

I always felt sorry for them when I would see them in Walmart. So glad you created this lens Laurie. As my daughter would say, Goody Job!

I always admired how these look but was told they can be quite a handful (mind you I was a kid =). I am really considering getting myself one in the near future.
