The Red Panda

Updated on September 11, 2014

Red Panda's Habitat, Characteristics, Food Habit, Lifestyle, Reproduction, Threats, Conservation, and Pictures

The red panda is one of the rarest animals on earth. Have you heard of it before? Yes, you have seen it in the Mozilla Firefox's logo and the famous kung fu panda movie character as master Shifu. It belongs to Mammal species and similar to raccoon, panda and domestic cat. The size of the red panda is smaller than usual panda. It usually has three colors red, black and white.

What if you see an animal that has long busy tail? Red panda has a long bushy tail, with this bushy tail red pandas cover or wrap its body. Red panda is about 40 inches long, so it is not just like a giant panda. We Asians are proud of this beautiful animal. Asia is an amazing continent where you can find this cute red panda. Do you want to see wild red panda? To see real wild red panda you must come to eastern Asia. Let's go explore more about the red panda.

Master Shifu from kung fu panda Movie

Have you ever thought that a red panda can be a famous animated movie character? Yes! I think you have all watched the animated movie Kung fu panda. Master shifu is one of the main charterers of kung fu panda movie, who is the master of Po and the Furious Five.

Master Shifu's Quote: If you are truly at peace, you can do anything

It is a cute plush doll! Don't you think so? Actually Kung fu panda is a famous movie and your little kids love to watch this movie over again and again. You can present this cute plush doll to your kids, she or he will be very happy.

Food Habit

I like eating bamboo shoots. It is one of the most popular dishes in Asia. It is always yummy to have fresh bamboo shoots as well as dried bamboo shoots. I think you will not be surprised to know that red panda's main food is bamboo too. It eats bamboo leaves, small branches and bamboo shoots. The different thing is we cook bamboo shoots while red panda eats it raw. Except eating bamboo, a mature red panda also eats blossoms, eggs, barriers, nuts, fruits, and small leaves. Red panda's cubs eat bamboo only until they become mature.

Yummy bamboo leaves! It is my favorite! Haha..

Lifestyle and Reproduction

Red panda's life style is normal. They don't hunt like a cheetah, lion, and tiger. They are calm and cool animal. They spent most of time in their life in the tree. Red panda's main food is bamboo, though they eat flowers, leaves, eggs. They love sleeping in there with their babies. It is noted that young red panda's grow relatively slowly than other animals.

Red panda has been marked as rarest animal on earth. Reproduction process of a red panda is very slow. They grow slowly and they take much time to give birth to new baby. Red panda's gestation period is about four months; they fully need 4 months for gestation.

Generally breeding season starts from fall through winter. That's the ideal time for breeding season and they give birth in spring and summer. They tend to be more shy and solitary except when mating. Red panda's baby remains in the nest for about 90 days or more.

Baby red panda remains and stays close to its mother until the next mating season starts. As red panda grows slowly, a baby red panda reaches its adult life after 12 months and a young red panda becomes sexually mature at 18 months. One mature red panda have a long gestation period, it may takes 135 days or more.

Does the Red Panda actually share DNA, or just the name, with the larger black and white animal called Panda? The Red Panda is definitely a cute appealing animal...and those plush toys look like great Christmas gifts!

I also didn't know Firefox's logo was a Red Panda, always thought it was a Red Fox. The Red Panda has a similarity to the Red Fox as well as the cat, raccoon and and panda. It seems like they are looking to us for help in the pictures....just kinda calling to us. Loss of habitat is such an important issue as we impose ourselves and I really think artificial fur can serve just as well in the case of these cuties. Beautifully presented in every way and very educational...nicely done and congratulations on your lovely purple star!
