The Dog Behind bossypants
Who Would Name Her Dog Bossypants?
Choosing a screen name was tough, but choosing my avatar was easy. Originally, it never occurred to me that there would be any relationship between the two, but now plenty of people think the dog in my avatar is named bossypants. Not so! She is Nattie.
Few things in life bring my family as much joy as our sweet beast. Nattie's a purebred Samoyed -- from championship stock, no less. She even has a fancy four part purebred name. But like the other companions we've loved before her, she is a rescue.
Need a Sign? How's This?
Where, oh Where, Can She be?
Anyone who has loved a family pet knows the hole that companion's loss creates. We were desperately seeking a way to fill the hole in our hearts after the loss of our 15 year old Samoyed when we heard of a 2 year old Sam girl who had been returned to her breeders. When we learned of the location, we knew she was for us. The breeders lived in the very town where we had vacationed with our recently deceased Sam for 7 years. We're only human, but even we got the message.
What's Fluffy, White, and Makes You Happy?
Naming a Samoyed
Some pet owners agonize over their pets' names, others wait for a sign. Still others take the more spiritual approach and wait for the pet to name itself through its personality or behaviors. Rescues typically come with names, which can provide another set of worries. Will changing the name traumatize an animal already making so many adjustments?
Trauma schrauma. We were brainstorming names before we even met our girl. Fluffy, Snowball, and Blizzard never crossed our lips. We'd already known (and loved) a Tundra. We considered the celestial: Nimbus, Cumulus. And, as she was a product of America's Dairyland, Mozzarella held sway for quite a while.
In the end, it was the motto on her hometown's welcome sign that inspired her name. Years before, the slogan had tickled us. Below the town name, the sign said simply, "Naturally." We could have gone with, "Rally," I suppose, but we decided on "Nattie."
Destined for Fame
The World is Her Biscuit
Samoyeds' human companions are accustomed to a certain amount of attention. Sams have a striking appearance. Walks are often happily interrupted with requests to pet the Samoyed and the perennial question, "does she shed?"
Our previous Samoyed (by her longevity, if nothing else) was dubbed the neighborhood icon. As technology causes our world to shrink, the neighborhood is no longer enough. Nattie supplements her actual neighborhood walks with virtual strolls. She's familiar to eHow, List My Five, and ParkGrades readers and is a presence on Face Book. Feeling quite the celebrity, she has traveled to meet fellow eHow writers. In fact, it seems many people identify her so clearly with bossypants, that as her human, I'm actually the one "behind" bossypants - far behind! But when you live with a Samoyed, that's as it should be!
Bonus: Nattie's Favorite Frozen Treats
Make an Easy and Wholesome Frozen Treat for Your Four Legged Friend
Making your own frozen treats for your sweet beast takes just minutes, requires no cooking and will save you a bundle. (In our stores, a box of 4 doggie "ice cream" cups runs close to $5, with tax.)
You can get cups and lids at restaurant supply stores. Or, Google "portion cups" for suppliers. Once you have the cups, all you need to do is pour low fat soy milk into the containers, snap on the lid, and freeze them. It's that easy!
Don't feed your dog these treats unattended and make sure your friend doesn't try to eat the cup. Check with your vet if your dog has any health concerns, before feeding frozen treats.
What's a Pup Panini?
When riding in the car with your favorite beast and a turn causes her to lean into you, that's a pup panini -- a warm press.
