The Endangered Snow Leopard: Facts for Kids

Updated on October 5, 2014

Snow Leopards Facts

Need information about snow leopards? Snow leopards are part of the cat family. Their scientific name is uncia uncia. They make their home in Central Asia.

Sadly, even though there are laws to protect them, snow leopards are on the endangered species list, which means if things don't change, these beautiful animals may cease to exist.

Here's a look at snow leopards and why they're endangered, along with pictures and videos.

Image by Marie Hale at Flickr through Creative Commons licensing.

Why Snow Leopards are Endangered

Mankind is the main reason that snow leopards are endangered. First, these cats are hunted for their fur and bones. Both of these bring in a lot of money to hunters.

Secondly, much of their natural habitat continues to be destroyed, thus making it difficult for them to find food.

Unlike other cats, such as lions and tigers, snow leopards can't roar.

How to Help Snow Leopards

There are different ways that people can help snow leopards. One is to help out rescue groups who are trying to save these animals.

One of these groups is called Big Cat Rescue. It's a sanctuary that helps all kids of big cats that have been abandoned or abused.

Another is Snow Leopard Trust, which is working very hard to provide a safe future for snow leopards.

So, how to help? Of course donations are always appreciated, although not everyone can afford to donate. So what else can one do to help? How about just spreading the word about these beautiful animals? Knowledge is always important.

Snow Leopard Help

Another way to help is by raising money for a snow leopard organization. For example, the class can create a piece of artwork, then auction it off with the money being sent to a rescue group.

There are less than 7,500 snow leopards left in the world.

I particularly love the one featured in your poll, what do you think he's thinking, he has a lot of concern in his face. Thanks for sharing. I hope my contribution every month to the WWF goes some way in helping them.
