Thing to know about french bulldogs

Updated on August 19, 2013

Meet Noki My French Bulldog

If you love french bulldogs because of their cuteness and big ears... Well you might want to read this and then decide for yourself. Now even though I absolutely 100% love my little frenchie. His breed has a number of things that made him more than meets the eye. (sorry for the transformers quote)

I bought my little guy 3 years ago, and he has been my little buddy ever since. The first thing you may not know about frenchies is they can't give birth naturally. The single most important fact of why they cost so much more than other similar breeds. If you have your heart set on a french bulldog despite the cost than make sure you go all the way and go to an american kennel club breeder.

5 Things You Should Know About French Bulldogs

1. That are common to something called hemivertabrae

This simply means that one of there vertebrae (spinal bones ) can be either partially developed or they can have an extra partial spinal bone. This can lead to a number of issues since their spine will be crooked.

2. They are a flat faced breed so regulating air temperature is a problem.

Since they have that iconic and trade mark smushed face they have a hard time breathing in the heat and cold. Case and point they are better off spoiled inside. Noki will always throw-up first thing when visiting my brother since he will no doubt start chasing his doggie cousin Kona first chance he gets out the car. Running in the heat and running after drinking will cause vomiting / gagging 100% of the time.

3. Frenchies tend to have skin allergies.

For Noki his number one skin allergy is when he eats anything with wheat in it. So I have to buy him wheat free dog food and wheat free treats. I have a awesome girlfriend that will also spoil Noki by making him fresh dog food. Note: if you're going to make homemade dog food make sure to given your dog a daily vitamin supplement to ensure that he/she is getting all the right nutrients.

4. They will require tons of affection and will want to be by your side at all time

As I am writing this Noki is trying to get up into my lap. If you're home they will want to be in the same room. If you try to close them off from you and they know that you're still home they will whimper and wine until you reunite.

5. They will need to have a food bowl that is off the ground.

French bulldogs tend also to have mega-esophagus. Which is actually the reason they are a breed that tend to throw up more. They will not fully swallow water or food if they have put their face into the bowl to eat.

6. There big bat ears are a cesspool for bacteria.

What this means for you is extremely smelly ears. One of the most fun stories I have about his stinky ears is the fact that he has actually woken me up trying to get under the blankets, just by putting his little head by my face at night. Was so annoying and gross at the same time. One of the best remedies that I have found to help with the odor is to occasionally use a eye dropper bottle with vinegar in it and apply several drops to each ear. This helps to reduce the bacteria within his ears.

7. French bulldogs are hard to potty train.

Frenchies are one the hardest breeds to potty train. It took me a full two years to fully potty train Noki from having no accidents for a whole month straight. If you were to look on several of the information sites about french bulldogs they would say the same thing. Also a interesting fact is that Noki hates potty pads. For some reason anytime I would put one down before work he would try to dig himself to china through the puppy pad.

I hope these seven reasons have not deterred you away from owning a frenchie. I merely wanted to inform anyone looking for information ahead of time about things I was not told and have had to research on my own. I love my frenchie and am possibly going to get my second within the next six months.

@razelle09: depends if they have health issues, but they can live on average for 12-14 years. They will typically be around 20-27 lbs
