Things for Cats

Updated on August 23, 2015

Are you concerned that maybe your cat has too much time on his/her hands and is bored during the day? There are some things that cats like to do that can keep them occupied during the day. Just doing a few things can help keep your cats from being bored and getting into mischief while you are at work.

Window Gazing

Most cats love to look out the window. If you raise the blinds up just a little, you can allow your feline friend to look out the window without destroying your blinds. If you have blinds and a curtain, you can raise the blinds and your cat probably won’t mind peeking behind the curtain. The curtain allows you to have some privacy, so the entire world isn’t peeking through your home or apartment. There are many cat towers or even regular side tables you can buy that will allow your cat a comfortable spot to window gaze for hours on end. This activity will keep your cat from just sleeping all day, as most cats love to spy on other cats, the birds, bugs and people. There is so much going on outside that they can safety look at from inside their homes.

Cardboard can be a great occupier of your cat’s time. An empty box or a piece of cardboard on the floor will likely attract your cat to come check it out and play around the cardboard. Cats like to hide in cardboard boxes or scratch along the sides. Those cat scratch boards are just corrugated cardboard. Next time you get a package in the mail, just save the box for your cat.

Scavenger Hunt

Cats like to hide things and find things. A fun game can be to hide your cat’s toys in different spots around the house. If your cat is not into toys, you can hide anything that he/she likes. My cats have always been fond of hair ties. They love to take my hair ties and play with them. You can hide anything in some of the favorite spots of your cats and have them get a fun surprise. If your cats love food, they might like for you to hide some treats at different spots around the house for them to find. My latest cat loves to take off her collar and hide it from me. It is a fun game for her, because she knows I am looking for it and wondering where in the world it has gone. She pulls it out from the hiding spot once she knows I have given up looking for it. In turn, I hide her favorite mouse toy under the bed for her to fine.

Mischievous Minds

Have a cat that likes to get into trouble? While some owners don’t want to encourage these bad behaviors, others are okay with letting their cats have some fun. If your cats like to tear up newspapers and magazines, you could leave a few that you are finished with out for them to play. If your cats love to rip up their toys, you could leave some stuff animals out for them to attack. These tips only work if you are happy to indulge your cat’s playful nature. If you are trying to train your cat out of these bad behaviors, then these tips aren’t for you.

Cats are naturally curious. As a result, there are a number of different activities you can do with your cat to take advantage of this trait. Just a few adjustments in your home can give your cats plenty to do during the day and increase their health and happiness. After all, happy cats make happy companions.

It's always fun to get in trouble with a cat. They have boundless energy, and it is best that they aren't bounding at 3 a.m.
