Thriving Miss Daisy | Big Dogs vs Small Dog | Labrador | Pit Bull | Chihuahua

Updated on November 23, 2014

Presenting Miss Daisy Honeycoat! Best Pet | Labrador MIx

My son wanted a dog. We discussed what kind of dog breed would be the best pet. His top choices were Jack Russell Terrier, Rat Terrier, and Labrador. discussing how many dogs were held in shelters and as a result, were endangered, the family took a drive to the local animal shelter, just to look around. Soon we spotted an adorable pup which could have only been a few weeks old. She was simply gorgeous! Convinced that she would fit nicely into our family, we made arrangements to adopt her, only to be advised that she was too young to be neutered and would not be released for another 3 weeks. When available from the shelter, we found that numerous other families had inquired about adopting Daisy (as he had named her), only minutes after we secured a 'reservation' to adopt her.

Puppy finds Home- Pet Escapes Risk- Life in Animal Shelter

We were previously a family of four, now five upon Miss Daisy's arrival. To say that the kids love her is an understatement. (They nearly rubbed the fur off her within the first week. Well, OK, all of us did). I have always loved animals and dogs are among my favorites. So Miss Daisy, has helped us heal from the loss of our beloved German short-haired pointer (Katie) which by all accounts, was something of a wonder dog. (Katie took herself for a walk if everyone were occupied. She'd hop to the top of the block wall, walk its length, jump down, trot over to the school, chase rabbits & birds, then return home, scale the fence & bark at the door to be let inside. She would sometimes chase a cat up on a roof of a nearby house, and have to be retrieved (completely contented with herself) from her vantage point atop a neighbor's roof top. She befriended our neighbors and visited their homes to watch TV, receive the odd treat, and return home). Our first surprise was when the Vet first examined Daisy, explaining some care and breed information with us. Instead of the Labrador Mix we had been told, (they had only mentioned and emphasized Labrador), It happens that Miss Daisy was instead mostly Pit Bull, a small part Labrador, and even smaller part Chow. We were at once shocked and concerned. Our gorgeous little pup would grow into a snarling menace to the family and the neighborhood, in general. Images of our soon-to- be lethal weapon, ran through our heads. Thoughts of any or all of our possessions, someone else 's pet, or heaven forbid, someone arm, in her mouth vividly came forth. What had we done?

I, sort of, awoke from the imagined hell I contemplated, hearing the Vet saying something about how Pit Bulls were very much misunderstood and suffered an unfair reputation. It was then I saw something amazing. The Vet gave a toy to Miss Daisy, played briefly, and then looked straight into her eyes and calmly said "release". Instantly, Daisy released the toy and sat quietly in front of him. The doctor explained that habits developed through consistent training would make nearly all pit bulls grow to become among the finest family pets. And so our adventure began.

Which Rescue Animals are The Best Pets?

From Labradors to Chihuahuas- Pets with Personality

Miss Daisy, Mr. Nico, Pedro (AKA the P-man), and Miss Katie(RIP), were all rescued from the OC Animal Shelter. Miss Daisy (a Pit Bull- Labrador Retriever Mix), Mr Nico ( toy Chihuahua), Pedro (also a toy Chihuahua) and Miss Katie (a German Short haired Pointer) have been cherished members of our family. All of these amazing pets came into our lives through the OC animal shelter. Numerous animals were charmed in the making of this lens. Rescue dogs make the best pets.

Miss Daisy likes a Drive, a Walk, Dogs, Dog Toys, and Animals

And Loves Dog Treats

Miss Daisy loves to go for a drive. Her favorite place to ride is in the front with her head near a partially open window. Her second choice is with her head laying on the driver 's lap. She leaps to attention whenever given a chance to go for a walk. She greets other dogs with a friendly approach, and will not assert dominance over even a very small dog unless provoked. In such cases, she postures, growls, barks and maintains an alert, but purely defensive stance. She makes friends easily, and seems to have nothing else to prove. She plays with dog toys & bugs, lifting them into the air, tossing them a few feet away, and barks at them. Birds landing nearby are greeted with a hearty bark and a playful stance(her head and torso lowered, hind end raised and raised wagging tail. Once, a bird flew into an open door, landed briefly and exchanged comments with Miss Daisy before flying back out that same door. Daisy appears to challenge lizards to play a game of chase, and very few have suffered more than a gentle toss and a challenge to continue play. And Miss Daisy loves sliced carrots for dog treats, or mixed in with her dog food, Which is Iams Lamb and Rice

We're Crazy about Miss Daisy

Daisy brings joy to all who meet her. She is playful, friendly, smart, beautiful, and with darn few exceptions, very well behaved.

Dog Training and Dog Treats

Miss Daisy has been trained to respond to both voice commands and hand signals. And she has trained the family to fetch her favorite ball if it get beyond her reach. We have used both dog training with and without dog treats. Ultimately, the treat becomes praise, love and positive physical reinforcement. She seems to enjoy training sessions and continues to learn new behaviors on command.

Miss Daisy is allowed and enjoys resting her head on a pillow when she sleeps.

Grammy nominated and critically acclaimed, Ray LaMontagne returns with his anticipated fourth studio album, God Willin' & The Creek Don't Rise. Entirely self produced (for the first time) the album was recorded in two weeks at LaMontagne's home in the woods of western Massachusetts. The newly restored historic home served as a homemade recording studio for Ray and his fellow musicians. With Ray's vocals at the forefront of the songs and a loose, almost live sounding recording, the album stands as a testament to a band at the height of their powers. The newly coined 'Pariah Dogs', consists of Jay Bellarose (drums), Jennifer Condos (bass), Patrick Warren (keyboard), Eric Heywood (guitar) and Greg Leisz (pedal steel guitar). Individually these musicians have contributed to the live work of such heralded musicians including Beck, Joe Henry, Tom Waits, Lucinda Wlliams, Ryan Adams and Joe Cocker to name a few of their career highlights. Together with Ray they shared a sense that the sessions for this record were rare and extraordinary.

Dr. Dog having evolved from a band whose primary creative outlet was the album-making process into one that favored the energy of their live performances, they knew they wanted to document the new dynamic they had developed on the road. Producer Rob Schnapf (Beck, Elliott Smith) was brought in to help peel back the intricate arrangements of last album Fate to reveal the raw immediacy of a tight five-man unit honing their craft.

I have a JRT who thinks he's a big dog and loves to play with labs, so I enjoyed reading about Miss Daisy. Because she is also a rescue dog, I thought you might be interested in my lens, "A Funny Dog & Cat TV Show" - which will raise a bunch of money for dog and cat charities. - There's also a video of Jake playing with labs. - thanks for your fun, loving lens! - Ted

Daisy looks like such a sweetheart. Thanks for reminding us what great dogs pit bulls are and that it is only terrible training that has given them a bad reputation.
