Toys for Cats -- Catnip and Beyond

Updated on October 5, 2014

Catnip Can Be a Cat's Best Friend

Catnip is good, but of course, a cat's human is a cat's best friend. And then there are all of the toys for cats that tend to accumulate when there's a cat in the house.

Cat toys are abundant. Pet stores and grocery stores carry all sorts of goodies to take home for kitty. But what cat toys do cats like best? Well, that depends on each cat.

My resident expert on cat toys, Scarlett O' Hairy, likes just about anything with fresh catnip in it or that has a strong odor, like fresh spices. After I brush her, she gets a treat or some catnip. Reward!

Catnip Toys for Cats

Many cats, but not all, love catnip. The smell drives them crazy. I love watching a cat play with a fresh catnip toy. When those back legs get moving, you know they're in kitty heaven on earth!

Catnip - Scarlett Likes It Straight from the Bag

I sprinkle catnip on our tile floor, and Scarlett eats it then rolls in it then finds something to claw (like the carpet or the couch) and then she chills.

I've also made catnip toys for Scarlett (and some other nice kitties) using felt, small plastic bags (to hold the catnip), and catnip.

Cat Trees for Climbing

Cat trees are great, especially if you have more than one cat. The bigger the better to let them each have their own spot. Some cat trees come with a toy or two, which makes the climb even more fun!

Ball Cat Toys - Give your kitty something to do while you're away

Cat Dancer - Get your kitty up and moving

I've read that play for cats takes the place of hunting. Since most cats don't have to earn their keep these days but have humans who pour food into their bowls, having a few cat toys that will get your cat up and at 'em is a good idea.

I have two cats. Both like to play in bags( of any kind) and tinfoil rolled up. They have alot of rarely used toys I've bought. Sigh....

Lol...I chuckled when I saw your dog tired cat. Not having a kitty of my own any longer I sure love visiting the cats on Squidoo. They are my internet pets.

Wow, your cat looks a lot like ours! OurFranklin cat also loves to play with laser toys, hair elastics (he flips them around and likes throwing them), and he loves to lick the inside of plastic grocery bags (don't worry, I supervise so he doesn't get hurt).

Adorable kitty. I am jealous, my son is allergic. Thank goodness he just ignores the dog (as far as allergies.) You found some really great products.

My cat doesn't use anything I buy for him. He has more fun with the box it comes in!

@Pam Irie: Those laser beams are fun! That's so nice that you crochet cat toys and donate them. Lucky cats!

I remember one of my cats loved this stuffed mouse toy - as a kid, we used to love to watch him play with it endlessly.

My son's cat loves the lazer beam dot. I make crochet cat toys with catnip to donate for the cats at our humane society. They seem to love them. :)

I saw the photo of your cat, and I had to visit your lens because your cat looks so much like one of my cats. He likes to sleep on his back too. Thanks for sharing the cat toy ideas.

It varies, right now I think its a foil ball. Either that or maybe us, not sure but sometimes we think there's a ghost animal in the house that she plays with because she runs around for no reason and yesterday she did this but looked scared! added to my SUlly's meowography

Great guide to toys! Thought most cats I've met seem to prefer the cheap, or free, experience of a paper bag to toys their owners bring home. Haha.

I have a glove with strings from the end of each finger. I have five cats. On a rare occasion, I can get all five of them to play with it at once.

When I had a cat, the favorite was simple string and yarn. I always got a kick out of the fun that most cats have with simple toys.

I wonder if Scarlett O' Hairy is aware that she is now a famous internet model and deserves even more catnip and beyond! Congratulations on another front page feature! I love the Cat, dead tired picture.
