Types of Small Dogs

Updated on July 29, 2017

Small Dogs are so cute

There are so many types of small dogs that are so cute and cuddly. But don't let their size fool you, some of them are more vicious than a Large dog! Small dogs are easier to maintain, or are they? It is said that Because they are small we tend to pay more attention to them, spoiling them, pampering them.

Sometimes we forget they are DOGS. I often wonder what the little critter is thinking while we put hair bows and dresses on them? But, we can't help ourselves they are just to cute not to dress up.

The question is, what type of small dog do you like best?

Here is list and brief discription to help you decide.

Affenpinscher

The monkey like expression is this breed's signature. These dogs are normally quiet, inquisitive and non argumentative, although they will fiercely defend their owners and home from predators. It's face and eyes should be checked daily and kept clean. This is because the coat on the is profuse and may interfere with it's eyesight.

Basenji

The Basenji is known as the African Barkless Dog. That is what is so unusual about this dog, it does not bark. It's tail curled like a doughnut.

House training comes quite easy for this breed since they are clean creatures but other training requires patience, affection and humor.

Their coat is short, shiny and absence of odor.

Boston Terrier

This Breed is generally healthy. Because of it's short nose it is inclined to wheeze and snore. I think that's what makes this breed so cute.

The Boston Terrier is good with children and a great companion. It loves to go for walks and rides in the car. It's coat is easy to maintain a simple rub down with a damp cloth several time a week keeps it clean, a total bath is not needed often.

Chihuahua

Long and Short haired

Whether Long or Short haired, the Chihuahua is adorable. Those big ears and eyes make you melt when they look at you. But oh, don't make one mad this feisty little critter can do some damage to your ankles.

The Chihuahua has a soft spot in the center of their heads called a Molera. The head should always be protected, a blow could be fatal. But don't worry you don't have to put a Helmet on the little fellow.

Cocker Spaniel

The Cocker Spaniel is an outgoing, happy and devoted dog. It is always willing to please it's owner. Great with children.

Dachshund

The sweet Little Dachshund "Weenie Dog" as most of us know them are very active dogs. They are good hunting dogs using scent to hunt.

The Dachshund comes in three different coat types, Long haired, wire and smooth coat. Their front legs are shorter than the back legs and paws are wide for better digging.

The Dachshund is a loyal dog to their owners. But may not be the best pet for children. Well trained Dachshund and Well behaved children will get along fine.

Lhasa Apso

Would you believe this tiny Lhasa Apso a Watch Dog? It has a keen hearing sense and barks with a deep Woof. Someone that hears the bark but can't see the dog would think it is a large dog

Poodle

The Poodle comes in variety of sizes, Standard, Medium, Miniature. toy and requires regular professional grooming.

The Pom-Pom on top of the head is what makes this dog popular and people go through a lot of effort to make it look just right.

As you can see here on the picture this one has been dyed with many colors.

Sussex Spaniel

A good house dog and family pet, the Sussex is very affectionate and easily trained. Requires regular grooming to keep it's coat shiny and luscious.

Tibetan Spaniel

The Tibetan Spaniels love to watch things from a high point of view, sitting up high looking down at hings. They are a highly intelligent dog. Very affectionate with family and friends but aloof with strangers. this little spaniel is sensitive and responsive to it's owner's mood's and feelings.

It may spend hours grooming itself. This is a happy little dog that enjoys life.

West Highland White Terrier

The West Highland (Westie) is a healthy and quite robust little dog. it is fun loving and will play with it's family members. It is quick to learn and always looks as if it understands every word being said to it. The Westie is perfect for Apartment owners.

Yorkshire Terrier

This delightful breed fits in anywhere. Their long elegant, silky, shiny coat is sure to swoon anyone. Not to mention that baby face. Just adorable!

Housetraining your Dog

This takes a lot of Patience

Consistency is the key to Housebreaking your Dog. When taking it outside don't play with your dog. Let it do it's business then take it right back into the house. You want the dog to know that going outside is only for using the bathroom. Then of course later once you've gotten your dog housebroken you can start staying outside and playing with it. By then it will distinguish the difference.

You should start by taking your pup outside first thing in the morning when it wakes up. Notice I said "when It wakes up". Not when YOU wake up.

Take your pup out:

* After eating

* After drinking

* After playing

* When it wakes up from a nap

* Any time in between everything else

Yes this will be strenuous on you for a few days or however long it takes your pup to catch on. Remember to always praise it after doing it's business. In the long run your dedication will pay off in the end.

Is your Dog a replica of you?

After you have had your dog for many years there is a saying that you tend to look like each other in some ways. How funny is that? Is that true?

I'm not saying you look like a dog. No bad intentions meant. This picture was to cute to pass up.

Your personality will rub off on your dog, not your looks.

      My favorite is the mini Dachshund.

      Wow, that's a real fancy bed! My Miniature Dachshund would have holes in it in no time! He loves to chew his bed even though he's past the puppy stage.
