WHITE TIGER FACTS

Updated on April 3, 2014

THE WHITE TIGER

White Tigers are not a separate breed of Tiger, but are Bengal Tigers that respond to a recessive gene for white pigmentation. It is not an albino. An albino has no pigmentation or color and these tigers have the characteristic dark stripes, but with white fur. Since they are not a separate species this animal cannot be specifically considered an endangered species any more or less than any other tigers.

In the Tiger's natural wild habitat it is estimated that only about one birth in ten-thousand results in the double recessive gene that produces a White Tiger cub. It is easy to see why spotting a White Tiger in the wild would be a rare sight indeed.

White Tigers are found almost exclusively in Zoos. I have read that all the White Tigers in captivity today are descended from a single wild White Tiger captured in the 1950s.

Tigers in their native lands of Asia are considered endangered. It is estimated that there are only a few thousand wild Tigers remaining. In the early 1900s the tiger population was thought to be in the area of 100,000. That is indeed a drastic reduction.

WHITE TIGER CLASSIFICATION

Since the White Tiger is actually a color variation of the Bengal Tiger and not a sub-species, the following is the complete scientific classification of these magnificent big cats . Interestingly enough, the White Tigers tend to be larger than their normal orange colored relatives.

Kingdom - Animal

Phylum - Chordata

Subphylum - Vertebrata

Class - Mammalia

Subclass - Eutheria

Order - Carnivora

Family - Felidae

Subfamily - Panthernae

Genus - Pantheria

Species - Tigris

Subspecies - Tigris Tigris (Bengal Tiger)

MORE WHITE TIGER INFORMATION

Although White Bengal Tigers are one of the most beautiful animals in nature, a primary purpose of their conservation is to increase attendance at the zoos that exhibit them. As they are a color variation of Bengal Tigers there is no ecological advantage to increasing their numbers in the wild. However, because White Tigers are so popular, they do serve an important function in raising public awareness as to the condition of the 5 sub-species of tigers still living in the wild even if it were possible.

If you wish to see Tigers in their natural habitat you will have to do some traveling. Asia and India are the areas of the World holding Wildlife Sanctuaries where one might spot a Tiger and maybe, although the odds are almost impossible, a rare White Tiger.

PICTURES OF WHITE TIGER CUBS

Looking at these White Tiger cubs it is easy to see why they would be easy prey in the jungles of their native India. Therefore this particular coloration of tiger is seen most often in captivity rather in the wild. However much of the disadvantage in color is offset by the larger size and proportionally greater strength once they become adults.

Mother Tigers are very protective of their young. A Tigress will look after her cubs for as long as three years.

Here is a White Tiger Cub in the wild. High on the rocks it is the master of all it can see.

STRIKING WHITE TIGERS

This is one of the most striking and inspiring picture of a White Tiger I have seen. A magnificent Tiger before a huge orange Moon in a habitat of water, bamboo and grass. Other than a fresh meal, what more could a Tiger want?

The above print is available for purchase from Zazzle by clicking on the picture.

Extinction really is forever. These magnificent Tigers, white or otherwise, deserve an opportunity to preserve their species.

I find this to be an incredible photograph of a huge White Tiger with a woman standing unconcernedly by. I assume it is probably PhotoShoped, but I don't know that. I do know that this is a magnificent backdrop for a Royal Tiger.

White Tigers are certainly at home in high, cold climates as long as there is a food source.

The stuffed White Tiger below is more in line with the type of large carnivorous cat I would prefer to meet close up and personal.

WILD WHITE TIGER - ZOO WHITE TIGER

There are few White Tigers found in the wild, as they are considered to be uncommon in their native habitat. The birth rate of white cubs to normal parents is estimated to be only about one in every ten thousand. The white coloration would also make the cubs more vulnerable to predators when they are young.

White Tigers tend to be somewhat larger and stronger at birth and as adults than their orange siblings. One might think that once they reach adulthood they would be as likely to survive as their orange relatives but this is not the case. A tigers natural coloration is an ideal camouflage for it's environment. The White Tiger however is obviously not well suited to stalking in a wild setting, it is too easily seen. Therefore its survival in the wild, due to the very real possibility of starvation is an all too real possibility.

So most White Tigers live in zoos around the world. The population of this strikingly beautiful cat is increasing thanks to the breeding efforts of zookeepers world wide. The accompanying White Tiger picture was taken at the Miami Metro Zoo. Doesn't the setting of this shot make for an exotic and eye catching photo?

THE DARK SIDE OF THE WHITE TIGER STORY

There is a possible disturbing story associated with the breeding and captivity of White Tigers. Follow the highlighted link above and make your own decision.

Another White Tiger picture in a zoo. This one looks quite comfortable.

WHITE TIGERS ARE AS FEROCIOUS AS THEIR ORANGE RELATIVES - WHITE TIGER PRINT - FIGHTING

Tigers are the largest species of cats inhabiting the planet at this time. The beauty and power of these animals is so apparent it can be seen and even felt even in photographs. Seen in videos, the grace, strength and stealth of these creatures is mesmerizing. When aroused and angry, these large cats are both beautiful and terrifying. Even though tigers are cats, these cats enjoy water and white tigers are no exception.

Here is something that is really Cool. A life size, White Tiger standup in heavy cardboard. What a great conversation piece for your home. How about standing it by the front door to great guests. Much more striking than a dog and it doesn't eat or have to take out to do it's business.

The above Tiger standup is available for purchase from All Posters by clicking on the picture.

WHITE TIGER HABITAT

Tigers, in general, inhabit a wide range of ecosystems. These range from high in snow covered mountains to hot and steamy jungles.

The wild White Bengal Tiger, also has a wide range of habitat. Their territories are wetlands and river basins, savannas, deserts and even forests high in the Himalayas.

These animals are large, active and burn a lot of calories. They can eat as much as 90 to 100 pounds of meat in a single meal. This is the primary reason tigers are very territorial.

Their prey includes deer, wild pigs, antelope, Asian buffalo and livestock. An adult Bengal Tiger has even been known to kill and eat small elephants. Tigers have also stalked and attacked humans.

Tigers are quite at home in the water and even enjoy romping and playing in an aquatic environment. Tigers will relax in the water to cool themselves and are accomplished swimmers.

What a magnificent and dignified wild animal.

WHITE TIGERS FOR YOUR HOME

It is easy to see the beauty of White Tigers in the wild and even in Zoos, but how about White Tigers as Home D├ęcor. Celebrate the beauty and majesty of these magnificent endangered creatures in your living room, bedroom, den, or where ever you might wish to display them.

>A beautiful pair of White Tigers with two Tiger Cubs. Although such a family grouping would be impossible in the Tiger's native habitat, it certainly makes an intruquing sculpture.

>How cool is this? A snarling White Tiger supporting an end table. Leave your drink unattended with this fierce guardian, no one will bother it.

>Showcase your bed and bedroom with this striking White Tiger Blanket. This beautiful feline is relaxing in a native environment and I'm sure would be just as comfortable in your home.

>A White Tiger Clock? Well, why not? Three tigers; a Mother with Cub in mouth and presumably the fierce Father White Tiger overseeing the proceedings. Provides a clock with a sculptured look and a great subject for display.

>OK, maybe this is going a bit too far but I just couldn't resist. A White Tiger Cub to hold your toilet tissue. Bet you would be the only one in your neighborhood with one on these.

ONE COOL CAT

I just like this one.

Very engaging lens and beautiful creatures. There were two white tiger cubs born in the Mogo Zoo near Bateman's Bay on the South Coast of NSW about 3 years ago. There was a lot of publicity at the time but nothing lately. Well done in bringing this to other's attention.

Now I sure learned a lot here about the beautiful white tiger, guess I thought they were naturally occurring albinos and didn't know about the dark side of the issue, seems we do enter in to everything. I'm with you, the stuffed plush white tiger would be my choice for comfort level as well. A very informative opportunity for your readers to learn about the white tiger while they shop!
