Did you know that you can help restore the balance of nature by feeding birds in your yard?  Feeding backyard birds is a simple and effective way to protect bird populations.  The more birds that are fed, the more birds, and baby birds, that will survive.  The more birds there are, the more insects they consume.  The fewer insects you have, the less you need to use insecticides.  The fewer chemicals you use, the faster your immediate environment will be back in balance and the more natural predators of insects you will have.  Additionally, the fewer chemicals you use, the safer you, your family, your pets, yard and water supply will be.  More birds will come to your yard and the cycle will continue.

Yankee Flipper

Looking for a bird feeder that repels squirrels? Droll Yankees makes the Yankee Flipper, a squirrel proof bird feeder. The manufacturer claims that this feeder is 100% squirrel proof. Birds love to eat from it, and squirrels are prevented from eating from it due to the weight activated perch. When it senses a squirrel (it’s calibrated for a squirrel’s weight), the motor unit makes the perch spin and sends the squirrels flipping off (thus, the name Yankee Flipper) – it’s quite a funny sight, actually. See the video below for some laughs.

The feeder tube is 21 inches long, too long for a squirrel to hang from the top and reach the seed.  The tube is made of a UV stabilized polycarbonate material that will not yellow with age and is very durable.  The motor unit is smartly located within the seed tube to protect it from the elements.  Rechargeable NiCad batteries come with the feeder, as well as a battery charger.  The hanging wire is made of sturdy stainless steel; it won’t rust.  The metal cap fits snugly – even the strongest squirrel can’t pry it off.  It can feed up to four birds at once.  This feeder holds about 4 quarts, or 5 pounds, of seed, so you don’t have to refill it too often.

Yankee Tipper

Also available from Droll Yankees is the Yankee Tipper. This feeder has the same basic design with the tube, hanger, capacity, and snug fitting top. The perch, however, is different – it is a flat disc which is weight sensitive and it collapses, or tips, down under the weight of a squirrel.

Yankee Whipper

The Yankee Whipper Squirrel Proof Bird Feeder has all of the same details as the ones above, but the perch is different. This perch is preferred by Cardinals. Like the Tipper above, the perch is weight sensitive and will collapse with the weight of a squirrel.

Yankee Dipper

The Yankee Dipper Squirrel Proof Bird Feeder also has a 21 inch polycarbonate tube with a seed capacity of 5 pounds, a tight fitting lid, and stainless steel hanger. The weight sensitive collapsing perch rods are calibrated for small birds, and when it senses a squirrel’s weight, it will dip down and the squirrel falls off.

A portion of the proceeds of the sale of Droll Yankees products is donated to causes that support wild birds and their habitats.

I agree - I was doing just that at my parent's house today and that's what inspired me to write this up.
