Updated on January 17, 2013

What is Scrapbooking?

Scrapbooking is more than just compiling different pictures together. Scrapbooking is an art and a way to preserve cherished memories and family history. Scrapbooking is not something that is boring or mandatory, but rather an enjoyable way to spend time with the family or by yourself. I personally love scrapbooking, it is one of my favorite hobbies. If you are interested in learning how to scrapbook, be sure to read this article that explains the basics of scrapbooking.

Why Scrapbook?

There are many reasons why you should try scrapbooking. First of all scrapbooking preserves precious memories for your kids, grandchildren, and yourself in later years. Scrapbooks allow you to take a trip back in history to go over a favorite vacation or experience. It means alot to kids to see your past and how they've developed over the years.

Scrapbooking is also a form of art. It involves creative elements that allow to healthily express yourself.

Finally, scrapbooking is a fun way to pass the times as a hobby, one which you can nurture throughout your life.

What do I need?

As a scrapbooker, you need several different materials to get started. First, you need your scrapebook album. You don't want a magnetic or low quality album. If you want to save money, skimp on other materials, but not the album since it is the most important part of your scrapbook project. Make sure to find a high quality, nice looking album that is an appropriate size.

You also need scissors and a paper trimmer. Paper trimmers are just as important as scissors because they allow you to easily cut straight lines. Next you want glue, usually you want a fresh gluestick. Finally you need papers and your photos.

How do I Begin?

Most scrapbooks need a theme and you should almost always have a theme as well. To begin, you want to pick out a slew of pictures that fit nicely with the theme. Afterwards, you want to group them together, since each of your pages will most likely have a subtheme. After you have your subgroups selected, find a page with a color that complements your theme.

Next you want to mat your photo. Matting a photo is basically gluing it to a small piece of paper in order to give the photo a small, but straight border.

Almost done, now you need to lay out your page. Make sure it looks good, because once you glue its done. After you glue done your photo feel free to adorn the photo with additional writing and other colorful objects. Congratulations, you have completed your first scrapbook page.

Great Hub! I too think that scrapbooking a great hobby, especially for children to put down all of their favourite things.I agree that you shouldn't skimp on the quality of the album, it'll be worse in the long run if you do!

My mom is amazing at scrapbooking and spends hours doing it. I just can't get anything I do to look as good as her stuff. Do you have any advice for scrapbookers who have no artistic or creative ability?
