Iconic Buildings

Buildings serve many function in our society, but the question one may wish to ask is what defines our buildings? Well the answer is our culture.That culture can be many things such as power, environmental, sustainability, and economic development. Iconic buildings are very distinct by its shape, colour height and functions.

The new Nile Tower is designed to be built in the heart of Cairo Egypt with its main structure standing 70 storey in the skyline, 140,000 sqm and over looking the river. It use will be mainly for hotel and apartment accommodation.

Futuristic shape buildings

The modern shape sky-line buildings designs are becoming very popular. The Signature Tower is a three-tower mixed used complex to be built in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The iconic building was designed by architect Zaha Hadid, with size of 3500,000 sqm above ground level and 300,000 sqm below ground level and comprises of offices, residential apartment, financial market, retail space, and promenade.

Nicolas Tower - Landmark skyline building in the Caribbean

The Nicolas Tower is located in Trinidad and Tobago in the city of Port of Spain. It standing 22 floor above ground level and comprise mainly of commercial office. The highlight is being one of the tallest building in the English speaking Caribbean and has an elliptical floor plate. Main Architect is Bynoe Rowe Wiltshire partnership.

Landmark Building - Juxtaposition

The National library and information system is located in Trinidad and Tobago in the city of Port of Spain. The highlight of this building is it is standing in a "juxtaposition" to two other landmark buildings which is the Red House and the Holy Trinity Cathedral.

World most sustainable building to be built in Wuhan, China - Zero Carbon

The building will be of zero carbon. Its special features are the roof which contains solar panels for generating energy and the central solar chimney that stand 120m high, is design for natural ventilation into the offices.The landmark building was design by architect Soeters Van Eldonk.

Record breaking skyline buildings - The world tallest building as at January 2010

The Burj Khalifa is now the world most tallest building in the Guinness book of record.The Burj Khalifa building is standing 818m (2684ft) proud and gracing the skyline in Dubai with 168 storey and 500,000 sqm of flats and office space.The building was name after the President of Dubai U.A.E Sheikh Khalifa. The Building design (base of the tower) originate from the Hymenocallis, an open petals flower of the desert.

Previous buildings that holds the record were:- The Taipei 101 which stand at 508m (1667ft) in 2004; Shanghai World Financial centre stand at 492m (1614ft) ; Petronas Tower 1&2 in Kuala Lumpur stand at 458m (1459ft) 1998 and Sear Tower located in Chicago stand at 527m (1729ft)

World largest Iconic Timber structure - Metropol Parasol

The awesome and landmark Metropol Parasol located in city of Seville, is truly iconic. The innovation and great display of laminated veneer timber is a great demonstration of sustainable and grand design.

The shape originated from a mushroom plant and was designed by German Architects Jurgen Mayer and Engineered by Arup Consultants. The profile of the building includes six number of 21.5 m high timber columns with a 3,000 meter square span of canopy, which allow for shading and will be welcome by a vast number of visitors. The design is dubbed to be the largest timber structure in the world with a record surface area greater than 11,000 meter square. Kingdom Tower

The artist Impression of the Kingdom Tower to be built in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia at a record breaking height at 1000 meters into the sky. Once completed it will be 100 meter taller than the world tallest building Burj Khalifa located in Dubai. Another design for the record books of iconic skyline buildings. Design by Architect Adrian smith who also designed the the Burj Khalifa.

      These buildings are amazing works of art. Are the two buildings at the top of the page for real? Or are they just artist renderings?

      @Rockett LM: The first building is call the Nile tower to be constructed in Cario, Egypt and the second building is the signature towers in Dubai, UAE is under-construction they both render image link into the proposed site.

      I think your quiz needs correcting. The world's tallest building is in Dubai but the answer you have is New York. Otherwise a very impressive lens and great subject. The pics and the buildings are incredible. Well done.
