10 Stunning Works of Art from Favorite Artist Joana Vasconcelos

Updated on August 11, 2010

Joana Vasconcelos is a highly creative artist. She makes beautiful pieces of artwork that you really enjoy looking at. They also have a message behind them but one that tends to be subtle despite the boldness of the work itself. Weaving together themes of womanhood, femininity, strength, and societal roles, Vasconcelos pushes the boundaries of how we look at the ways in which women live and work. That's why some modern women name her as a favorite artist.

1. Tampon Chandelier

One of the most attention-getting and controversial pieces of work that Vasconcelos has put out into the world is a stunning chandelier made of tampons and string. She's taken an every day object of women that is generally kept out of sigh and turned it into the kind of architectural centerpiece that is designed to be looked at. This makes a powerful statement about women. It also shows off her great talent at taking ordinary objects and turning them into something magnificent. Made from more than 14,000 tampons strung together, this piece of art must have taken a very long time (and a lot of patience) to put together!

2. Stainless Steel Pot Shoes

Another great example of how Vasconcelos uses every day objects to create large-scale works of art are the shoes that he has made out of ordinary stainless steel pots and their lids. Again, this seems to make a statement about the role of women in society ... pots and pans are supposed to be the domain and of women as are impossible-to-wear high heel shoes. The fact that these sculptures are larger-than-life seems to hint at the idea that this high standard women have traditionally been held to is also a larger-than-life thing that perhaps we can't all accomplish. Ignoring this big message, the time and effort that went into constructing these perfect shoes is definitely noteworthy.

3. Detailed Crochet Pieces

Her work with highly detailed hand-done crochet is one of the reasons I was first drawn to learning more about Joana Vasconcelos. It's what makes her a favorite artist of mine. She crochets pieces that look like little doilies and then shapes them into and around every day objects. There are many different pieces of this work in her portfolio but the piano shown here is one of my personal favorites. It's strong and yet delicate ... so lovely!

4. Aspirin Sofa

If you take a really close look at the image of this piece of art what you'll see is that it is made from aspirin containers. No, not the bottles themselves but the little foil-and-plastic blisters that hold the medicine within a box. They have been painstakingly put together to create a piece of furniture that actually looks strong enough to sit down on (although it surely must not be).

5. Hand Knitted Wool Work

I am not entirely sure what the meaning or purpose or artistic statement is of the works that Vasconcelos has done with knitted wool. However, there is something about them that I am drawn to. The colors and textures appeal to me. I could see decorating an artsy child's room with some of the stuff from this section of her portfolio.

6. Colored Crochet Pieces

Many of the crocheted works of art that Vasconcelos has done have been the white doily-effect pieces. However, she has also done very intriguing work with colored crochet. This unique sculptured crochet piece hanging from a crochet-covered lamp is a terrific example of something creative that has both a femininity and a strength to it.

7. Wrought Ironwork

This piece of functional artwork from her collection intrigued me. At first glance, it didn't seem to fit with the rest of the stuff that I liked from her portfolio. However, upon closer inspection, I can see that the curved details of the wrought iron definitely have her sense of style. There is also something about the femininity of growing plant life constrained within the tight iron that speaks to the theme of her work. Plus, I love that she uses a variety of materials in her work; that's another reason that she is a favorite artist of mine.

8. Glass Sculpture

The beautiful green glass of these bottles captures the sunlight in an interesting way in this outdoor sculpture piece by Vasconcelos. It's one of her pieces of work that I think is just plain old pretty to look at!

9. Independent Hearts

In 2004, Vasconcelos made a series of these hearts in different colors. They are made from unorthodox materials including plastic cutlery, old CDs and metallic chains. Each one differs from the next because of the different meanings we associate with colors but they are all stunning detailed heart shapes that demand a second look.

10. Goalie Art

To be honest I wasn't able to find any information about this piece other than the image and a reference to Vasconcelos as the artist. It certainly looks like her work. I love the way it stretches the eye and the imagination!

What creativity. That was absolutely fantastic. Just wondering about the tampon chandelier, were they new or used?
