1950's Flowered Hat Crochet Pattern

Hat in Crochet

Crochet this hat in white or ecru with colorful flowers or it would be equally pretty in gray with red flowers. The model was made of January and Wood's Kentucky All Purpose Yarn in white (2 skeins).

Abbreviations: St (stitch); ch (chain); sl st (slip stitch); sk (skip); rnd (round); sc (single crochet); sp (space); inc (increase); dec (decrease); dc (double crochet); tr (treble) - thread over twice, work off 2 lps at a time; lp (loop).

Gauge: 6 sts equal 1 inch and 5 rows equal 1 inch

Beginning at center crown, using white, ch 4, join wiht sl st to form ring.

Rnd 1: 5 sc into ring.

Rnd 2: *1 sc into next sc, ch 1, repeat from * to end of rnd.

Rnd 3: *SK 1 sc, work 1 sc into next ch sp, ch 1 (1 pattern st), (to inc 1 pattern st) work 1 sc back into same ch sp, ch 1, *repeat from * to * to end of rnd.

Rnd 4: **Repeat from * to * as in rnd 3, sk 1 sc, work 1 sc into next ch sp, ch 1, repeat from ** to end of rnd.

Rnd 5 and every alternate rnd: work even in pattern st without inc.

Rnd 6; **Repeat from * to * as in rnd 3, work 1 pattern st in each of next 2 ch sps, repeat from ** to end of rnd. Continue to work every alternate (inc) rnd in this manner but work pattern st inc, 1 pattern st further apart each rnd. Continue to alternate inc rnds (as rnd 6) and even rnds (as rnd 5) until there are approximately 66 patterns, then work 9 rnds even.

To Shap Brim - Row 1: Work even to within 15 pattern sts from end of rnd, turn.

Row 2: *Inc 1 pattern st in next sp, 1 pattern st in each of next 4 sps, repeat from * to within 15 pattern sts from end of rnd, inc 1 pattern in last ch sp, turn.

Row 3: Work even to end of row, work 1 pattern st in turning ch of previous row, 1 pattern st in same ch sp as last pattern of row before previous row (row 1), 1 pattern st in each of next 2 sps on last rnd of hat, turn.

Row 4: As row 2 but inc in every 6th ch sp instead of 5th and end row as row 3.

Rows 5, 6, 7: As row 3 but to end row 7, work even in pattern st to end of last rnd of hat (center back). To insert wire in brim facing, hold wire parallel to brim, insert needle in back of lp of each st and work over wire in sc around entire brim.

Racing - Row 2: *1 sc in next sc, ch 1 sk 1 sc, repeat from * to end of row.

Row 3: * 1 pattern st in each of next 5 sps, (to dec) draw up lp in each of next 2 ch sps, yarn over and through all lps on needle, ch 1, repeat from * to within 7 patterns from end of row, turn.

Row 4: Work in even pattern st to within 7 patterns from center back, turn.

Row 5: As row 3 but work to within 2 patterns from end of previous row, turn.

Row 6: Work even in pattern st to within 2 patterns from end of previous row, turn.

Row 7: As row 3 but work around entire brim, work 1 pattern st in turning chs of previous rows.

Flowers - Large Front Flower: Using black, ch 6, join with sl st to form ring, work 9 sc into ring. Fasten off. Using red, join to black sc and * ch 13, turn, 1 sc in each of the next 3 ch, 1 dc in each of next 3 ch, 1 tr in each of next 3 ch, 1 dc in each of next 2 ch, 1 sc in next ch, 1 sc in next black sc, repeat from * 8 times. Fasten off.

Leaf (make 2): Using green, ch 18, turn, work 1 sc in each of next 3 ch, 1 dc in each of next 5 ch, 1 tr in each of next 5 ch, 1 dc in each of next 3 ch, 1 sc in next ch, then repeat in reverse along other side of ch. Fasten off.

Small Side Flower (make 2): Using gold, ch 4, join with sl st to form ring.

Rnd 1: 7 sc into ring.

Rnd 2: 2 sc in each sc. Fasten off.

Rnd 3: Join blue, * 1 sc and 1 dc in next sc, 3 tr in next sc, 1 dc, and 1 sc and 1 sl st in next sc, repeat from * to end of rnd. Fasten off.

Stem: Using green, join in back of gold center, ch 18, turn, sl st along 12 ch; for leav, ch 9, turn, 1 sc in next ch, 1 dc in each of next 2 ch, 1 tr in each of next 3 ch, 1 dc, 1 sc, then sl st along stem ch and break off.

Daisy: Using black, ch 4, join with sl st to form ring.

Rnd 1: 5 sc into ring.

Rnd 2: 2 sc into each sc. Fasten off. Using gold, join to black sc, * ch 15, 1 sc back into same black sc, ch 15, 1 sc into next black sc, repeat from * to end of rnd. Fasten off.

Finishing: Sew flowers on hat as illustrated, or as most becoming. Sew bring facing to inside of brim. Hat may also be used without flowers, adding veiling or bands of narrow velvet ribbon around the crown instead.
