But there are four distinct areas you need to be aware of and which you need to spend time and effort on. For two of those steps you should bring in an expert. Step 1: Copy or what the website is all about

It seems to be quite strange that so many people tend to think that content, also called copy, is just going to appear out of nowhere. It isn’t. And it will require some effort to put it together. It shouldn’t be the job of the web designer either who generally does not have the relevant copy writing skills

You as the website owner is generally the only one who knows what a website needs to talk about. You know your customers and you know how to sell them your service or product. Perhaps you might lack the skill to put your ideas into compelling words. Then find a good copy writer to do this for you.

Step 2: Photographs

As for images. Remember that photos work better than a thousand words. If necessary get a professional to take good pics of your products or related topic for you. Or maybe try illustrations, prepare a video - or have one done by a professional.

Step 3: The visual part

There are two elements to your website, besides the copy and images. The one is what you can see and the other is the code that makes it all work. For the visual part you should find yourself a designer to help create a look for your website that is great and that you are proud to show off.

It’s easy for a well designed website to stand out because so many websites have been designed by amateur designers. Bad choice of colours, fonts and images can really spoil the look of a website. Even if the content is good a bad design can put visitors off.

Most of us have no idea how a website works. And we don’t need to either. It’s a little like never looking under the hood of your car. Not many of us understand how the engine works that makes our car move. But without the engine the car wouldn’t be able to get out of the garage.

In the same way a website has a hidden engine that makes it work. When you click on a link there is a hidden bit of code that tells the website what needs to happen. The more sophisticated the interactivity on a website the more complex the code has to be.
