5 Adorable Free Amigurumi Crochet Patterns

Updated on September 8, 2013

The Secret Ingredient to Crocheting

Are you a crocheting maniac like I am? If not, you should really consider converting to the dark side. Crocheting is one of my obsessions and I would like to share it with the world. Crocheting is very relaxing and yet you can still end up with a product at the end that can be worn, keep you warm under its covers, or just be pretty to look at. That is better than going to the spa. Seriously.

Amigurumi - The Ultimate Crocheting Project

There is a type of crochet that is known as amigurumi. Simply put, this is the Japanese word for knitted or crocheted stuffed toys. Generally they are made in the forms of small animals or creatures, but may also represent other things, such as people or objects.

Most people that knit or crochet considered amigurumi to be harder than other patterns. This is mostly because it is a project that is done in a 3D form and it usually has to be assembled out of multiple parts, including limbs, head, hair, and eyes. Another reason is that the stitch work is typically tighter than most projects so that when stuffing is added it won’t be visible in between the stitching. This is achieved through the use of smaller hooks or needles than would normally be utilized for the weight of the yarn being worked.

Anthropomorphic features are common in Japanese culture, and this is generally applied in amigurumi creations. This means that human traits are placed on nonhuman forms, such as having an animal stand like a human or wear clothes. The same traits could also be put on inanimate objects with the application of eyes or limbs.

Amigurumi make wonderful presents. Although they don’t have much practical use, they are so cute that people absolutely love them. Since they can be made in almost any form imaginable, you could make them as whatever that person likes or collects. For instance, if you have a parent that loves owls, make an amigurumi owl. It will be so cute, homemade, and thoughtful that they will really love their present. Usually amigurumi are made with over-sized heads and small limbs, attached to a cylindrical shaped body.

Baby Elephant Amigurumi

Enjoy the free pattern now!

A small stuffed baby elephant that is incredibly adorable is featured on Red Heart's Website. And the best part is that the pattern is available for free. This would be an excellent gift for a baby shower.

You can also give it as a Christmas present (especially to an expecting mother) as an ornament. Turning an Amigurumi into an ornament is relatively simple. Using a large embroidery needle and a piece of thin ribbon, slide the needle through the head about 1/2 inch from the top. Push it through to the other side straight across, the same distance from the top as the entry point. You want the elephant to be hanging level and not crooked, so make sure that the ribbon position doesn't need adjusting. Make a knot near the ends of the ribbon, making sure the ends are symmetrical. And, there you have it--an ornament!

Despicable Me Minion

Along with the free pattern

It is hard to watch Despicable Me and not want a minion of your very own. They are so silly, lovable, and fun to watch. Now you can have one for yourself, or make one for a loved one as a special surprise.

It made me very happy to see the free crochet amigurumi pattern for a minion on the internet. This pattern is available on Wolfdreamer's blog at no cost.

I know one person that will be getting one from me for his birthday... my husband. He fell in love with the movie when he saw in and has been wanting his own minion ever since. Every few days he will request me to make one for him, and I've been putting him off. Because I know that I will be giving it to him for his birthday. Stall tactics have not been very helpful for me...

The best thing since sliced bread

Crocheting amigurumi has no limitations of where it can go. Even zombies and robots can be made to look cute.

A few things to remember:

Keep your stitches tight by selecting the correct size crochet hook.

Select the right colors that mesh well together.

Make your project look cleaner and more put together by added safety craft eyes.

Crochet in spirals instead of rounds.

Use the invisible decrease method for an even stitch pattern.

And above all, have fun!

@SusanDeppner: I love crocheting, but can't seem to find enough time to do it as much as I want to. Most presents I like to make though, and when I do crochet, I'm usually making something for someone else lol.
