52 Week Art Journaling Challenge: Why its a Good Idea

At the beginning of this year (2015) I made a decision to create more creative content. When I first started my online media company, I focused on entertainment writing, health writing and personal development topics. I have always created mixed media visuals for my sites but I didn't really place a lot of emphasis on it. However, at the start of this year, I decided to change that. One of the things I have been doing a lot of over the past few months is art journaling. Why Did I Decide to Do a 52 Week Art Journaling Challenge

So, why did I decide to do a 52 week art journaling challenge? There are a number of reasons why I decided to undertake this challenge. One of the reasons was, i have been under a lot of stress recently, over the past few years I have been through a number of things that provoked some really negative emotions in me. I found that doing challenges, allowing myself to be creative and use creativity as a an outlet helped me to process some of these negative emotions. The challenge gave me something positive and creative to focus on. I don't see it as work, I see it as a necessary part of my healing process and personal development journey. Art journaling is helping me to grow and learn as a creative spirit. It is allowing me to explore different creative techniques, to delve deeper into my own creative abilities and push harder to improve as a creative and as a person. I am really enjoying the process of creating daily, and taking my mini art journals and supplies with me everywhere I go.

So every week for the next 52 weeks, I will be creating a mini art journal and filling it up with some interesting visual techniques, writing and creative visuals. Below is my week one video, I am currently on week four of the challenge and so far I have experienced a number of positive changes. Here are some of the positive changes I have experienced since beginning the 52 week art journaling challenge.

  • My thought pattern has shifted from negative to positive. i have always been someone who tries to think positive about most situations. However, recently due to various circumstances i have found myself having negative thoughts more often. Since I started art journaling, whenever i would think of a negative thought, I would immediately start creating something to process that thought. By the end of my creativity session, I would feel happier and those negative emotions usually turn to positive.
  • I am inspired every day to create. Before I started art journaling, I would go through phases where I would not feel in the mood to create. I wouldn't feel inspired and I just didn't want to create anything. However, since starting the art journaling challenge, I feel inspired every single day.
  • Techniques have improved greatly. Since I started the challenge, I have seen a gradual improvement in my work. I have also eliminated the habit of overthinking every single piece that I create. I now create without thinking about it too much.
