A Closer Look At 'Suicide Girls': Nude Art or Porn?

Updated on February 28, 2014

Suicide Girls are unique woman representing their individuality and sexiness, today the site boasts over 2,000 models and has a growing audience hungering for more. They express their life and love for the alternative living, while baring it all themselves. And the question just is, is Suicide Girls pop art or alternative soft core porn? Many have put the site in the soft core porn section and filed it away for safe keeping never questioning the subject again. But is it really where the file belongs? With our vastly evolving world of new ideas and arising boundaries, is anything what it seems anymore? Can it be that taking a picture of a naked person in the right lighting, with the right photographer isn’t porn any more than it is taking a picture of a beautifully sculpted art piece? Graffiti is now considered an art form if you can believe it, and I admit some trains are actually beautiful because of the acts of vandalism when I’m waiting at the next railroad crossing.

So in all brazenness, nude photography + tattoo’s & piercing’s = a fresh new outlook on nude photography and the way people view beauty. Now I am the kind of person that loves breaking boundaries, and my mind is as open as the grand canyon but I admit even some pictures that I see from that site aren’t artfully done, they are more sexually done. As I quote from a good friend of mine “there is nothing artful about taking a picture of a girl when she is bent over”.

Here’s the thing, if Georgia O’Keefe and Tiziano Vecelli can paint pictures of flowering vaginas and centuries old of medieval seductive sirens, who are we to write off some of the most beautiful girls and photography of this era. Granted, sexuality has been pushing the boundaries for as long as humans decided that we had to be civilized. Which brings up another question; If humans are essentially animals, and we express outlook on our own animal instincts through creativity, isn’t that the definition of art? Therefore that would bring up the argument that porn is art, but that’s not what this blog is about today ;)

Suicide Girls originated in Portland, Oregon and eventually moved to Los Angeles, California when they took off with their new upbeat look at woman with alternative beauty and lifestyles. The site started because the founder (Missy Suicide) realized that all of her friends had piercings and tattoos, and all of them were beautiful if not more than societies’ standards of what is accepted as beauty. All of the sets of photos that are taken are done with a pinup sort of theme, added in with whatever artistic atmosphere the photographer decides is best with the model. Creating dazzling inventions of art with new perspectives, that will give you a feeling of a fresh breath of air. Suicide Girls models are definitely different that of the usual airbrushed models and skewed mindsets of starvation as a healthy diet for you to be a model. This in essence tells our image obsessed culture, that it is ok to be different and to make your own image of beauty. Healthy? I would like to think so.

The question comes up in our minds, why are they called “Suicide Girls”? The real reason, is not because of the punk, emo and sometimes goth fashion as you might see, but is really from the term ‘suicide’ as a metaphor for “killing the part of you that is mainstream, and freeing your inhibition’s to tell yourself that its ok to do something that you’ve been told is bad your whole life”. Which is certainly is an expression of empowerment and freedom.

In 2001 they started in an urban loft as an online community and a cyber-gallery of alternative pin-up photos, and the statistics show their growing popularity as they have over 1,000,000 visitors weekly and 300,000 of them have subscribed to the Suicide Girls sensation. Over a 1,000 applicants are waiting to become the next Suicide Girl as “hopefuls” on the page, waiting to be reviewed and voted on by members. They encompass a wide range of clothing lines, books, burlesque shows, DVD’s, and even get brought in on TV shows. E! has named them within the top 10 sexiest jobs to have, and I’ll agree to that.

At the moment they are one of the longest running burlesque shows in the United States, and the most popular events to go to. Some people don't really know what to expect from a Suicide Girls show, and maybe that's the charm. Something entirely new and unpredictable.

Suicide Girl vs. Napoleon Dynamite!

When you become a Suicide Girl, you earn $500 per set of photos, which range from 20 to 50 pictures a set, and every time you make the set of the day, not only do you make the opening entrance for the page you earn another $500. Which isn't too shabby.

So while many people are thinking that these girls may just be a little over the top, we have to stop and think what other things were considered over the top (like showing your ankles 80 years ago) and wonder just how far behind are we in catching up with these independent outgoing ladies.

Do you think Suicide Girls photography is either...
