My favorite hobby is to crochet doll clothes. Using what I've learned from reading existing patterns, I create my own designs for Barbie.

With lacy clothes being trendy these days, I thought I would try making a lacy top for Barbie. Admittedly, if this was for a real person, you would still need to wear something inside as the fabric is filled with holes.

This hub is a plain lacy sleeveless top made specifically for Barbie Basics doll (or Model Muse). For more information on the body types of Barbie, please visit Crocheting Clothes for Your Barbie Doll.

Materials and Gauge

Special Stitches

  • I used the same stitch pattern for the body as the easily adjustable bracelet. To find out what S3 means, please visit Easily Adjustable Bracelet.
  • sc2tog = sc the next 2 sts together (usually 1 sc and 1 ch for this pattern)

Pattern

Row 1: Ch 44, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch, S3 across to last ch, sc in last ch, turn.

Row 2-16: Ch 1, sc in first 2 sc, S3 across to within last st, sc in last st, turn.

Note: Rows 1-16 constitute the body of the top. If you want to change the length, feel free to change the number of rows.

Straps:

Row 17: Ch 1, sc in first 2 sc, do S3 2 times, ch 10, sk next ch sp, sc in next st, do S3 4 times, ch 10, sk next ch sp, sc in next st, do S3 2 times, turn.

This is what the top at Row 17 should look like.

Row 18: Ch 1, sc in first 2 sc, do S3 1 time, ch 3, sk the next 3 sts, sc2tog, S3 3 times, ch 3, sk the next 3 sts, sc2tog, sc in the next 8 sts, sc2tog, S3 2 times.

Fasten off. Weave in all ends.

Note: There are two ways to go about closing this top:

  1. Sew on snaps in a straight line and have Barbie wear it loose like the usual lacy tops in stores.
  2. Sew on snaps in an angle so the top will fit closer to the body.

For the photo, I went with Option 2.

How to Style Your Lacy Sleeveless Top

You can opt to change colors every few rows or so to change the color effect of the top. I used a variegated thread so the color changes were out of my control. Colorblocking and lacy fabrics are trendy nowadays. For more on colorblocking, please visit Colorblocking Clothes in Crochet.

Try to go for solid bottoms instead of ones with lacy fabric. Too many holes in an outfit might make your Barbie look trashy. I borrowed the Short Shorts from the other Barbie outfit to complete the look.

If you decide to go for a longer top, it will make a good night wear for your Barbie to wear in bed. You still might need some Barbie Panties, though. You would not want your children to think Barbie goes to sleep with just a lacy pajama, right?

You can also forgo the snap and have the opening in front instead of the back. It will make a good cover up for beach wear, in case your Barbie wants to go on vacation. You can try pairing it with Barbie Strapless Bodysuit.
