Basic Wire Work Techniques for Jewellery Making - How to Create a Loop and Beaded Connector.

Updated on March 1, 2016

Wire work is a very versatile technique that can be used in jewellery making. Wire of many different types of metal, including gold, silver, copper and plated base metals can be used to create decorative items and also components such as clasps, ear wires and bails. Using wire and a few tools beautiful and intricate designs can be created.

This hub contains step by step instructions showing how to create two simple jewellery components using wire.

Creating a Wire Loop

1. Hold the end of the wire in round nosed pliers. The size of the finished loop will depend on where in plier jaws you place the wire. For small loops use the tips and for larger loops move the wire further down the pliers jaw.

2. Holding the pliers in one hand and the wire in the other, bend the wire around the plier jaws until it meets the start of the wire.

3. Without removing the wire from the pliers, reposition them so you can bend the wire around a little more. The wire end should rest on top of the wire.

4. Position the wire so that the point where the end crosses over the wire is just below the jaws. Bend the wire end backwards so that the length of wire is now directly below the centre of the loop. You may need to adjust the loop a little so that the end no longer overlaps.

Beaded Wire Connector

1. Hold the end of the wire in round nosed pliers. The size of the finished loop will depend on where in plier jaws you place the wire. For small loops use the tips and for larger loops move the wire further down the pliers jaw.

6. Bend the wire so it at a right angle to the bead.

7. Hold the wire using round nosed pliers, at the same point you did when making the first loop. If you wish you can use a marker to draw a small mark on the pliers so you get the same spot both times. This can be especially useful if you are making lots of loops/connectors at once.

8. Bend the wire around the pliers until it crosses next to the bead.

9. Using wire cutters trim off the excess wire just after the crossover point.

10. Use the round nosed pliers to reposition the wire end as you did in step 4 so that it meets the wire threaded through the bead neatly.

11. Finished connector. Repeat the steps to create more as needed. The loops on either side of the bead can now be opened to join them together or attach them to other items.
