Bruno The Amigurumi Dog: Free Crochet Pattern!

Bruno the amigurumi dog is designed by Tiny Mini Design and he is one of the most well-dressed crochet dogs on the internet! This pattern has been translated and published in this article with permission of the original designer. The original pattern is written in Turkish and can be found here. The Tiny Mini Design website where the Turkish designer posts all of her wonderful creations is filled with many more free patterns (both her own creations and those of others). Be sure to check it out and don't worry about the language: remember that Google Translate is your friend!

Materials

  • Yarn: Dark brown yarn (shoe sole, belt, and trimming), light brown yarn (pants), light blue yarn (shoes), light green (shirt), white (head, hands and ears).
  • Dark brown felt for eye patch and ears (see photo).
  • Light blue felt for the little bow tie.
  • Crochet hook, right size for the chosen yarn thickness.
  • Safety eyes.
  • Little buttons for the shirt.
  • Embroidery floss: Black, brown and light blue.
  • Cardboard or plastic base to insert in the bottom of the shoes for extra flatness and stability (optional).

Crochet Stitch Abbreviations

Sc = Single Crochet
Inc = Increase (two sc in one stitch)
Dec = Decrease (crochet two previous stitches together with one sc)
BLO = Back Loop Only (sc in just the back loop of the previous stitch)

Shoes & Legs

Start with dark brown yarn (for the sole of the shoe), make two. Work in continuos spirals.

Round 1: Chain 10.
Round 2: Starting from the second stitch from the hook: 9 sc, 5 sc in one stitch, continue on opposite side of the chain with 8 sc, 1 inc (24).
Round 3: 1 inc, 8 sc, 6 inc, 8 sc, 1 inc (32).
Round 4: Repeat 5 times (1 sc, 1 inc), 6 sc, repeat 2 times (1 sc, 1 inc), 6 sc (40).
Round 5: Repeat 5 times (2 sc, 1 inc), 10 sc, repeat 2 times (1sc, 1 inc), 10 sc (48).
Round 6: Repeat 6 times (7 sc, 1 inc) (54).

Switch to light blue yarn (for the shoe itself):

Round 7 - 11: 54 sc (54)

Optional: Place the cardboard (or plastic) base inside the shoe.

Legs - Continued

Continue in light blue yarn:

Round 12: 8 sc, repeat 8 times (2 sc, 1 dec), 14 sc (46).
Round 13: 46 sc (46).
Round 14: 8 sc, repeat 8 times (1 sc, 1 dec), 14 sc (38).
Round 15: 38 sc (38).
Round 16: 8 sc, 8 dec, 14 sc (30).

Switch to light brown yarn.

Round 20: 24 sc in BLO (24).
Round 21: 24 sc (24).

Round 26: Repeat 6 times (2 sc, 1 inc) (24).
Round 27-29: 24 sc (24).

After making the second leg do not fasten off the light brown yarn!

Legs - Continued

Continue with light blue yarn.

Attach the yarn to round 20 of the leg (this is the first light brown round) and crochet 2 rounds of 24 sc.

Switch to dark brown yarn and crochet 1 round of 24 sc.

Body

Round 41: Attach the legs together and continue crocheting the body as follows (see photo above!): With the light brown yarn that is still attached to the second leg chain 3. Attach the yarn to the first leg and crochet around with sc. Crochet sc in the 3 chains in the middle and crochet around on the other leg.

Make sure the feet are pointed in the same direction!

Round 66 - 44: sc around both legs and the chain in the middle (66).
Round 45: Repeat 6 times (9 sc, 1 dec) (60).

Switch to light green yarn (for the shirt).

Round 52: 54 sc (54).

Round 57: Repeat 6 times (6 sc, 1 dec) (42).
Round 58 - 59: 42 sc (42).
Round 60: Repeat 6 times (5 sc, 1 dec) (36).
Round 61 - 62: 36 sc (36).
Round 63: Repeat 6 times (4 sc, 1 dec) (30).
Round 64 - 65: 30 sc (30).
Round 66: Repeat 6 times (3 sc, 1 dec) (24).
Round 67: 24 sc (24).

Switch to white yarn (for the neck and face).

Round 68: 24 sc in BLO (24).
Round 69: Repeat 3 times (6 sc, 1 dec) (21).
Round 70: sc 21 (21).

Fasten off, leave long yarn tail for sewing.

For the collar:
On round 68 (this is the first white yarn round) find the two middle stitches in the front. Mark the stitches on either side. In one of the marked stitches attach light green yarn and crochet 22 single crochet stitches around the neck. The final stitch should be in the second marked stitch. Chain 1, turn your work and crochet 22 sc back until you reach the first marked stitch. For more clearity see photos!

Use dark brown yarn.

Round 1: Chain 55, slipstitch in the first chain to form a loop.
Round 2. 55 sc in each chain.

Round 1. Chain 12, slipstitch into first chain to form a loop.
Round 2. Chain 1, repeat 3 times (3 sc in one chain, 2 sc), 2 sc, 1 inc, slipstitch buckle closed.

Make two. Start with white yarn (hand).

Round 1: 6 sc in magic ring (6).
Round 2: 6 inc (12).

Round 5 - 7: 21 sc (21).

Assembly & Finishing Touches

Sew all the crocheted pieces together in the appropriate places.

Add the following finishing touches (also see photo!):

  • With some black embroidery floss, carefully stitch the felt pieces to the ears and sew the eye patch to the head.
  • With black embroidery floss make two little eyebrows (see photo).
  • With dark brown yarn (or embroidery floss) sew the nose and "mouth" on to the snout.
  • Cut out a bow tie out of light blue felt, wrap some light blue embroidery floss around the center and sew it to the appropriate place.
  • Use light blue embroidery floss to sew two little buttons to the front of the shirt.
  • Use brown embroidery floss to make the pocket and zipper details on the pants (see photo!).
  • Use dark brown yarn to sew the laces to the shoes.

Congratulations! Your Bruno amigurumi dog is finished!
