Build a Website - How to Decide on a Unique Niche

Updated on June 30, 2011

So, you are thinking of building a website?

  • Where do you start?
  • Uncertain you might not have the skills?
  • Is this a difficult process?
  • Where can you get help?
  • What are the costs involved?

If you have those questions and more, you have come to the right place. My intent is to make the understanding of the process of creating a website as simple as possible. I will only impart what I myself have experienced and what I know will work!

OPTIONS

There are many options to choose from, in terms of what programs to use, whether to use the free website builder that is comes with a number of web hosting plans, etc. Do peruse through the below hub pages as you will gain insight that will help you in setting up your website. You will learn what you need to do and better still, what you need to avoid doing!

The SIX STEPS TO CREATING A WEBSITE are:

  1. Decide on a unique niche
  2. Decide on a name for your website
  3. Register a domain name (e.g. orchardsthree.com)
  4. Plan the content of your site
  5. Build your website
  6. Sign up web hosting company (A web hosting company stores the pages and all associated images, sound, flash, etc. of your website and allows them to be viewed on computers connected to the Internet)

Your focus indeed is to have your website built, I am sure you will agree that all these efforts are fruitless and in vain if no one visits your site. Therefore, it is critical to knuckle down onto THE FOLLOWING SEVENTH STEP

7, Build traffic to your website (marketing techniques).

So, let's not wait any longer and start with STEP 1

STEP 1 Decide on a unique niche

This is the fun bit. Having decided that you want to create a website, you now start by deciding on what theme it will be based on.

The best thing is to write and develop a credible, high value website or blog based on the strength of your knowledge, niche interest, demand, or passion. In short, what are you good at? What are you passionate about? On what theme are you an ‘authority’ on? What comes easily to you? What skills are reasonably unique to you? In what ways are you able to leverage your uniqueness?

This is something that only you can determine for yourself. For example, if you have fallen in love with gardening, parenting, making friends, making money, cars, pets and such, sell that love! Sell that passion! It is that passion that your site visitors will connect with.

I agree that most themes have been written about on the web. But these themes have not been totally exhausted. What I mean to say is that World Wide Web is not limited by geographical boundaries, culture, traditions, etc. People from the other side of the globe can benefit from your unique experiences, key insights and thought processes on various themes from the place that you are occupying on this planet. These experiences, insights and thoughts when related in the form of content in your website would be the thing that will help set you apart from other websites. It would be your point of difference to your online visitors.

As far as I am concerned, there are no one magical site with the ideal content as most sites are worth the effort. If you have passion for what your theme is, put in the time required, are willing to invest some funds and a lot of energy on growing the site, the chances are that your site will be much more successful than the next person who gets online without much effort.

Once you have decided upon the theme of your website, it is now time to work out what you will be calling your website. Find out more, move on to ...

STEP 2 Decide on a Name for Your Website
