Cherry Blossoms of Spring

Every year I love to see the beautiful pink flowers of the cherry blossom trees that line our Avenue.

Although the blooming time is short, the sight is so uplifting. The scene brings with it promise of a new and abundant year. Life bursting forth from the potential of the tight buds that have been protecting and slowly developing the delicate petals during the first few months of the year.

Prunus-the flowering cherry

There are many varieties of the cherry tree

In Japan they have been considered symbolic for many centuries due to fact that the blossoms are so beautiful, but only last for a short time before they die. This has given them a strong association with mortality.

Because of their symbolism cherry blossoms have been used in all kids of art forms for hundreds of years. They have also been used to commemorate the deaths of Japanese soldiers all over the world.

Japanese manned suicide bomb

In the second world war the Japanese designed a single person aircraft so be a "suicide" bomb, in an attempt to escape defeat by the allies.

This plane was called the Yokosuka MXY7 Ohka (cherry blossom) due to it's brief lifespan.

Cherry blossoms in tattoos

The symbolism of cherry blossoms is often used in tattoos because of the deep symbolism. This type of tattoo will always have lasting meaning while, ironically, the blossom itself will last only a few days.

Cherry blossom as a symbol is representative of the fundamental teachings of Buddhism which say that all life is suffering and is transitory. The Japanese have long held strong to the Buddhist belief of this transitory nature of life and it is considered very noble, in their culture, not to become too emotional - or hang on to a particular outcome because it will all pass in time.

Cherry blossom festival in Vancouver BC

Since 2006 there has been a cherry blossom festival to commemorate the 37,000 cherry trees gifted to Vancouver by Japan.

The following website gives updates in where the blossoms are flowering in the city and other associated events.

Check out the crazy umbrella dancing that has been happening at the festival in the video to the right.

Cherry Blossom inspiration

I love this video showing how to make an origami cherry blossom as a treat dish.

It's easy to see how we can be inspired to create symbols of these beautiful flowers to bring this beauty into other parts of our lives.

Interesting how something made from pink paper has the ability to instil the same feelings as the flowers and remind us of the scents and colours of spring.

Little did we know...

It's funny how a tree with pink flowers can have so much impact on humans.

How we recognize attributes our own human lives when we see these ancient flowers.

It just shows that there is nothing new under the sun and all life here in earth is interconnected.

      Hi Movie Master.

We've had a lot of rain this year too...luckily there are many other varieties round and about that have yet to bloom.

      Glad you enjoyed!

Cherry blossom is so beautiful, since they started flowering here we have had a lot of wind and rain and sadly the blossom hasn't lasted long.

Hiya catsimons, I love flowers, and now I know more about cherry blossoms. In my neighbourhood, cherry blossoms are mostly white.. there are a few pink, but mostly white. The park is lined up of white cherry blossoms right now, and it's beautiful. Thanks for the lovely photos and interesting videos. Voted up and definitely very interesting. Cheers!
