Chronicle of a website. the building of a website, from beginning to end.

Updated on July 7, 2012

The Beginning A Good Place To Start

I want a website. That is what I decided one day.

So I decided to do it.

First come the Idea , I wanted to do something to make money on-line. I started looking at the cool packages you can buy on-line. Each one guarantees you will make millions in a month. You just have to follow their plan.

You may be shocked to find out they don't work. Some of them could if you jumped through all the hoops they ask , and spend all the money they ask. The problem is, if I had that much money I would not need to make more.

Any way, I settled on one , that looked good. Here is the basic idea. You buy several domain names. You use this companies website to search for good names. I typed in Longmont, the town I live in. It returned many things like longmontautoservice.com or plumbersoflongmont.com. You get the idea. Then you build a site for info on the subject. You place adsense ads on each and the money just rolls in.

I had to tell you this , so you understand where this all started.

So That Was The Start.

I was working with "the plan" and thinking I do not have the extra five or six hundred to make this work.

So doing a domain search I found a domain name that was available. It seemed like a great name so I grabbed it. Now what to do with it. I stopped for the night. I was laying in bed and it hit me. No not my wife. She stopped doing that. An idea hit me.

I would build a site that no one else , or at least almost no one else was doing.

Now What I Asked.

I have built a few web sites in the past , several years ago. So I had some idea.

I needed a domain host. My first choice "host gator" . I had them a long time ago , and I like how easy it is to use the cpanel interface.

Next , How To Build The Site.

I wanted a social network site. And I did not want to build it from scratch. Some of the programming was way above my head.

I settled on a content management program called "elgg" it is a free open source program.

I had to make lots and lots of modifications to make it work for my idea, But with a little help from some great people in the elgg community I was able to get through that.

The Next Two Months.

I spent every spare second on it. I get up at 5:30 am for work. Come home around 5:00 pm and work on the site until Midnight. I have been a little tired.

The Idea

I wanted to build a site where users can build a Gift list then share it on Facebook.

I wanted to make it very simple. What I wanted to do was let my users search for gifts to add to their lists , Then click a button to add it. Well think again. Browsers will not let you do that.

Security protocols have been built into browsers to keep websites safer. I do not fully understand why.

So I found a way as close to and easy as possible.

The site is called " Accesschristmas.com"

I wont place a link here as not to break policy , But if you would like to check it out. Go to my profile I have placed a link there.

It is kind of cool. You click the facebook button to create a account. Then follow the instructions to build a gift list. After it is built ,you just hit the Facebook like button to post it ,and all your friends can see it, and come look at and buy the gifts you want.
