Hans Christian Anderson is a beloved storyteller and the story of the little mermaid is one of many favorites. Anderson was a Danish author who began to write as a young teen. He published his first two installments of his famous Fairy Tales in 1835. His stories were translated into 125 languages and became beloved around the world. His fairy tales became classics when translated into the English language, and influenced many British children's authors. There is a statue of the little mermaid in the harbor in Copenhagen, Denmark.
Edmund Dulac was a talented illustrator from France. He moved to London in 1904 and joined the London Sketch Club. This opened the door for him to be introduced to important book authors and illustrators of the time. He was commissioned to illustrate stories by the Bronte sisters, and in 1911, he contributed his talent to Stories from Hans Christian Anderson. His illustrations for The Little Mermaid are among the best known drawings for this beloved tale.
