Create Stunning Button with Gradients and Red Vellum Texture

Updated on December 12, 2015

From this Photoshop tutorial you will learn how to create cool colorful button in thirty three short and easy to follow steps. In the process of work you are going to draw with Rounded Rectangle Tool of Fixed Size and changed Angle of Rotation, Rectangle Tool, Custom Shape Tool and lots of layer styles. The most important part of the tutorial is the use of Gradients and Red Vellum Texture which will add awesome color shades and relief to our button.

All Photoshop versions are applicable.

This is what you are going to create:

STEP 1

Start by creating a new Adobe Photoshop .psd file of Width and Height 1000px both. Set Resolution to 96 Pixels/Inch (if you don't intend to print the final result) and select Transparent for Background Contents. We'll colorise the first layer in the next step. As you can see on the following screenshot, I have called my file Button.

Rename also Layer 1 to Background.

STEP 2

Change Foreground color to #f8cc85 and use Paint Bucket Tool or Edit, Fill, Foreground color to colorize the Background layer.

Create the Button Body with Two Rounded Rectangles and One Rectangle of Fixed Size

In Steps 3-10 you have to draw three shapes with Rounded Rectangle and Rectangle tool. You also have to apply Transformation of 45 degrees Angle of Rotation on each of the shapes to put them in the right place.

STEP 3

Create a New Layer on top of Layers panel and call it Rectangle 1. Press Ctrl+G to place it in a Group and name the new Group Button.

Set Foreground color to #537b82.

While Rectangle 1 layer is selected, navigate to the Tools bar and grab Rounded Rectangle Tool. In the Options bar set its Mode to Pixels, its Radius to 70 pixels, check Fixed Size and insert 700 for both Width and Height.

Draw your Rounded Rectangle in the middle of the canvas. For the purpose you can use the help of Smart Guides or just draw two intersecting guides at 500px horizontally and vertically.

STEP 4

While Rectangle 1 layer is highlighted, go to Edit, Transform and insert 45 degrees for Angle of Rotation in the Options bar. Press Enter to apply the Transformation.

STEP 5

Set Foreground color to #cb8725. Create a New Layer on Top of Button Group and name it Rectangle 2.

Grab Rectangle Tool in Pixels Mode, set its Width and Height to 600 pixels both and draw the rectangle in the middle of the canvas as you see on the screenshot below.

STEP 6

Keep Rectangle 2 layer highlighted, then go to Edit, Free Transform and as in Step 4 insert 45 degrees for Angle of Rotation in the Options bar. Press Enter to apply the Transformation.

STEP 7

Now Ctrl+click on Rectangle 2 layer's thumbnail to Load a Selection, then highlight Rectangle 1 layer and press Delete key to remove the selected part of the blue Rounded Rectangle. Press Ctrl+D to Deselect when ready.

STEP 8

Set Foreground color to #cb6200 then Create a New Layer on top of Button Group and name it Rectangle 3.

Take Rounded Rectangle Tool in Pixels Mode. Set its Radius to 70 pixels and Width and Height to 450px both.

Draw this small Rounded Rectangle again in the middle of the canvas.

STEP 9

Using again Edit, Free Transform, rotate our Rectangle 3 to 45 degrees and press Enter to apply the Transformation.

STEP 10

Now Ctrl+click on Rectangle 3 layer's thumbnail to Load a Selection then highlight Rectangle 2 layer and press Delete. Go to Select, Deselect (Ctrl+D) to get rid of the selection.

Apply Blending Options on the Three Rectangular Shapes

In Steps 11-27 you have to do lots of work on colorizing the rectangles and giving them volume and texture. You’ll be using Inner Glow and Shadow, Gradients, Texture Overlay, Stroke, Bevel and Emboss and Contour to create the final effect. Applying Satin Layer Style will help you to add awesome wavy shade to the small Rounded Rectangle.

STEP 11

The fun part starts with this step. We'll start playing with the Blending Options in order to create our beautiful and colorful button.

From the next step till the end of the tutorial you have to draw Copyright Symbol using default Custom Shape. Then you have to apply Gradient, Shadow and 3D Effect to make the symbol look glossy and embossed.
