In this tutorial I will show you how to make a text which looks as if it was made of glass or shiny plastic with star pattern inside. Following my step-by-step instructions you will learn not only how to make this text, but also some handy tips on how to use GIMP 2.8.

If you do not have GIMP yet, find it here: GIMP

Also for this tutorial you will need a star brush like the one I create in my previous tutorial, if you do not have the one, please check how to make it here:

How to make a star brush in GIMP 2.8 tutorial

Step 1

Open GIMP, create a new file by going to File / New 1200 x 800px in horizontal position.

Step 2

Take Text Tool, set:

Font – Digifit (it comes with GIMP 2.8)

Size – 150

Colour - #db0000

Line spacing – “-30”

Letter spacing – “20”

Pull from one corner to another one to create a rectangle which is going to be place for your text.

Type text “Game World”, both words should start with capital letter and word “World” should be placed on a separate line right underneath the word “Game” and position this text in the middle of the canvas (just pull top boundary of the text towards the middle) see fig 1.

Go to Select / None.

Step 6

Move the layer with black text below the layer with red text by using the green arrow at the bottom of the Layers tab or go to Layer / Stack / Lower layer see fig 3.

Step 15

Repeat “Step 14” for the rest of the letters.

Then go to Select / None see fig 10.

You do not have to do it like this separately for every letter, instead you can set a starting point at the beginning of the letter “G”, pull across the whole word “Game” and set the ending point at the end of letter “E”. However doing letter by letter allows for a more neat effect.
