Any face covering is better than none, especially if worn by a person who has the virus but doesn’t know it

— Tara Parker-Pope (New York Times)

For the next two years, till a vaccine or cure is developed, face masks are going to be wardrobe staples. Here is a fun crochet pattern for a face mask if you're already bored with basic stitches. It uses a lighter version of the starbust or catherine wheels stitch and is easy to adapt to whatever size you need it to be, depending on the materials you have at hand and your own measurements.

This pattern includes:

  • Tools and materials
  • Written pattern (American terminology)
  • Recommended video on how to put a filter insert

...Most of us — who are staying home and practicing social distancing in public — don’t need the high level of protection required for medical workers... You need something that is efficient for removing particles, but you also need to breathe.

— Dr. Yang Wang, Assistant Professor of Environmental Engineering at Missouri University of Science

Tools and Materials

  1. Cotton yarn

  1. 3.5mm crochet hook is used on this pattern but you can other sizes depending on you skill
  2. Needle
  3. Scissors

Cotton absorbs water which will dry out the virus but don't get your face mask too wet or it will turn into a virus petri dish.

Use light colored yarns so stains will be visible and alert you to change your mask immediately.
