Easy to Make Home made Happy Birthday card with a Cricut and Stamping

Updated on July 28, 2012

Birthday cards are so much fun to make and receive. Many times the card is how you show someone that you remembered their special day.

Rather than choose from the hundreds of pre-made greeting cards I like to create and give a homemade card. I use my Cricut personal cutting machine and stamps from Stampin'Up! to make special and pretty cards.

Heavy weight cardstock creates the best finished homemade cards. The cuts are better when the paper is heavy and the stamping colors look better also.

Step by Step

Cut a white piece of heavy cardstock to be a size 11" x 4 1/4"

Using a scrapbook folding tool (mine is from the Cricut Essentials Kit); carefully fold the cardstock in half to make a 5 1/2" x 4 1/4" base card. Sometimes it is helpful to place the card under something heavy to make the fold permanent.

Cricut Machine Cut: Sweethearts cartridge

Cut one <Cartoche>, size 3 3/4", page 74. Use the shift key and base keyboard key. This will cut out the larger "cartoche" shape. Use a nice patterned piece of cardstock.

Cut one <Cartoche>, size 3 1/2", page 74. Use the shift key and base keyboard key. This will cut out the top "cartoche" shape layer. Use a solid or subtly patterned piece of cardstock.

Cut one <Cartoche>, size 1 1/2", page 74. Use the shift key and base keyboard key. This will cut out the smallest "cartoche" shape layer to be used with the Happy Birthday stamp.

Adhere:

Adhere the 3 1/2" cartoche to the larger 3 3/4" cartoche cutout.

Adhere the finished cartoche layers to the center of the front of your base card.

Cricut Machine Cut: Simply Charmed cartridge

Cut one <Bday Cake>, size 1 1/2", page 74 using the Shadow and base keyboard key. This will cut out the largest layer of your birthday cake. I used white cardstock.

Cut one <Bday Cake>, size 1 1/2", page 74 using the Layer 1 and base keyboard key. This will cut out the main birthday cake layer. Choose a "cake" type color. I used an orange patterned piece.

Cut one <Bday Cake>, size 1 1/2", page 74 using the Layer 2 and base keyboard key. This will cut out the flame shapes and a piece of trim for the bottom of the cake. I chose a subtly patterned yellow piece of heavy weight cardstock.

Cut one <Bday Cake>, size 1 1/2", page 74 using the Layer 3 and base keyboard key. This will cut out the candle shapes. I used a white cardstock.

Cut one <Bday Cake>, size 1 1/2", page 74 using the Layer 4 and base keyboard key. This will cut out the frosting layer. I used the same heavy weight cardstock as was used for the cartoche background.

Adhere:

Adhere the cake layer to the bottom shadow layer.

Adhere the flames and trim to the cake layer.

Adhere the candles under the flames.

Adhere the frosting layer on top.

Stamping:

On the smallest cartoche piece cut from white cardstock, carefully stamp the Happy Birthday sentiment and the bear. I hand colored my three colors onto the stamp before stamping. If you feel it might have dried while coloring, simply blow onto the stamp as you would to clean your glasses and the colors will revive to stamp.

Adhere:

Adhere the Happy Birthday sentiment to the left side of the cartoche layer already adhered to the card.

Adhere the Birthday Cake layers to the right side of the cartoche layer already adhered to the card.

Finishing

Draw a smiley face on the birthday cake.

Dot tiny dots around the stamped layer and you can also dot around the cartoche layers for added interest.
