Easy to Make 1st Mother's Day Card

Updated on May 26, 2012

This card celebrates Happy Mother's Day to a brand new mom! The first Mother's Day is special, if feels as though you've joined an exclusive club.

I made this card using cheerful colors of heavy weight cardstock. These colors could be used for either a boy or girl new baby; however, you can also choose the colors that are being used for the baby's nursery.

I love the choices you have when you make your own homemade greeting card and using the Cricut personal cutting machine makes the process so much easier. The cutout shapes Cricut provides in their cartridges are too numerous to list but you will find the perfect cutout for any card and occasion.

Step by Step

Using a 12" x 12" piece of heavy weight cardstock, I cut it to be 5 1/2" x 8 1/2" with my Cricut Essentials Kit paper cutter. This is one tool I wouldn't be without; it is like a standard office paper cutter but can be folded for storage.

Take the 5 1/2" x 8 1/2" piece of cardstock and fold it inside out using the folding tool from the Cricut Essentials kit. This way the nice finish on the front of the cardstock is not blemished when folded. Set aside with something heavy holding it down so the fold becomes permanent.

Cut a smaller off-white piece of cardstock to be 3 3/4" x 3". This will be used for the background of the Happy 1st Mother's Day" sentiment.

Adhere the piece of cardstock to the left front of your folded card.

Simply Charmed Cartridge

"Happy Mother's Day" sentiment:

Cut one <NstDoll1>, page 40, sized 2 1/2" using the Word and base keyboard keys. This will cut out the top layer of the sentiment. I used Yellow cardstock.

Save the dots cut out from the sentiment for embellishing later.

Cut one <NstDoll1>, page 40, sized 2 1/2" using the Word, Shift, and base keyboard keys. This will cut out the bottom layer of the sentiment. I used Green cardstock.

Adhere the two sentiment layers together.

Adhere the sentiment layers to the off-white cardstock piece. Space the Happy away from the Mother's Day layers so that the 1st layers will fit. Basically adhere the words closest to the top and bottom of the off-white cardstock piece.

"Newborn Chicken in Egg" cutout:

Cut one <ChickEgg>, page 35, sized 2 1/2" using the Shadow, Shift, and base keyboard keys. This will cut out the larger shadow layer of the Chick. I used the same off-white cardstock.

Cut one <ChickEgg>, page 35, sized 2 1/2" using the Shift and base keyboard keys. This will cut out the shape that peeks out through the Chick's eyes. I used a Dark Blue piece of cardstock.

Cut one <ChickEgg>, page 35, sized 2 1/2" using the Layer 1, Shift, and base keyboard keys. This will cut out the Chick's head peeking out of the broken shell. I used Yellow cardstock.

Cut one <ChickEgg>, page 35, sized 2 1/2" using the Layer 2, Shift, and base keyboard keys. This will cut out the broken shell cutout. I used Blue cardstock.

Cut one <ChickEgg>, page 35, sized 2 1/2" using the Layer 3, Shift, and base keyboard keys. This will cut out the Chick's beak. I used Red Cardstock.

Cut one <ChickEgg>, page 35, sized 2 1/2" using the Layer 4, Shift, and base keyboard keys. This will cut out the front of the shell with circular cutouts. I used Green cardstock. *Save the small green circles for later embellishments.

Adhere the Dark Blue layer to the off-white layer.

Adhere the Yellow layer on top.

Adhere the Blue Layer near the bottom edge of the yellow Chick's body layer.

Adhere the Green layer right over the blue layer so that the circles cut out of the green shows through with blue cardstock.

Adhere the Red beak where indicated by the Cricut machine scoring.

Now take two of the small yellow cardstock circles you saved and adhered them in the center of two of the shell's circle cutouts.

Adhere the finished Chick layers to the right side of the card slanting it a bit for a better fit on the card.

Optional:

Take your saved green and remaining yellow cardstock circles and adhere them below the finished chick layers.

You could finish up here unless you do want to cutout the 1st part of the sentiment with your Cricut machine. If you don't have the Don Juan cartridge (it usually comes with the Cricut personal cutting machine) then you could carefully draw a "1st"

Don Juan Cartridge

"1st" sentiment:

  • To save time, cut the 1 and the S and the T in each color without changing cardstock. Simply change your settings with the same cardstock color still in the machine.

Cut one <1>, page 58, sized 1" using the Under Pressure and base keyboard keys. This will cut out the top layer of the 1. I used Yellow cardstock.

Cut one <1>, page 58, sized 1" using the Under Pressure Shadow and base keyboard keys. This will cut out the bottom layer of the 1. I used Green cardstock.

Cut one <s>, page 50, sized 3/4" using the Under Pressure and base keyboard keys. This will cut out the top layer of the "s". I used Yellow cardstock.

Cut one <s>, page 50, size 3/4" using the Under Pressure Shadow and base keyboard keys. This will cut out the bottom layer of the "s". I used Green cardstock.

Cut one <t>, page 51, sized 3/4" using the Under Pressure and base keyboard keys. This will cut out the top layer of the "t". I used Yellow cardstock.

Cut one <t>, page 51, sized 3/4" using the Under Pressure Shadow and base keyboard keys. This will cut out the bottom layer of the "t". I used Green cardstock.

Adhere the layers of the 1, the s, and the t together and adhere to the card in between Happy and Mother's Day.

Finished!
