Check out StudioEmmaKaufmann here:
1. When did you open your shop?
"I set up the shop in 2006 but my life was so busy that I did not start posting items in it until the summer of 2014!"
2. What do you make?
"I create colorful custom pet portraits of your furry friends. I also paint a lot of wild animals and endangered species. I sell prints of these paintings and items with the paintings printed on them like pillows and t-shirts. https://www.etsy.com/listing/224092463/purple-dog-cushion-great-dane-pillow?ref=shop_home_active_7
I also create unique items like your pet portrait on a pillow….a really fabulous gift idea for petlovers https://www.etsy.com/listing/218681061/custom-pet-portrait-cushion-your-pet?ref=shop_home_active_1"
3. What is your favorite item in your shop?
"I really love this hummingbird silk scarf…a gorgeous swirl of reds, blues and purples. This painting was originally painted in alcohol inks and then printed onto the scarf. It’s very popular with moms and mums too!"
4. What is your biggest challenge?
"There is always a conflict between spending time making stuff and spending time promoting my shop. If you aren’t making art you feel guilty and if you aren’t promoting it day and night you feel guilty too. Also I have a job as an art therapist and two kids so I have to keep a lot of balls in the air. I’ve also been trying to get in touch with either Oprah or Martha Stewart to paint a pawtrait of one of their pets. I may just go ahead and do it! And then they will tell all their friends about my fabulous portraits and I will become a portrait artist to the stars ……"
5. Where are you from?
"I’m from London, a big city girl with a penchant for crumpets, English pubs and fish and chips. After meeting Mr Right I hopped the pond fifteen years ago and now live in Baltimore, USA where I am gradually learning that the UK and USA are two countries separated by a common language! My American born children constantly make fun of me calling things the English words like sellotape instead of Scotch tape and bin instead of trash can."
6. Why do you love Etsy?
"It just feels like a very vibrant place to hang out. I love checking out other people’s shops to see what they are making. I have met many interesting artists mainly through Etsy groups on facebook. It is fun to promote other artists and crafters you are passionate about. It really feels like a big supportive artsy community and I love the chilled out vibe!"
7. Tell me about your shop
"I love painting animals of all stripes so decided to specialize in animal art. I love to work in splashy, splotchy watercolors to create vibrant, fun-filled works of art. When doing custom pet portraits I also strive to depict your pet and capture his unique personality with my brushes."
What is your favorite item from StudioEmmaKaufmann?
8. How did you get interested in crafting?
"I come from a long line of artists. My grandmother taught me to crochet and sew. She also did woodcarvings and made all her own clothes. My mother similarly loved to knit, sew and create art. So I was always making stuff ever since I was a child. I am an only child who had quite a few imaginary friends and we were always making things together, mainly clothes peg dolls and doll house furniture. I studied art over the years in many college classes and particularly enjoyed life drawing. It is only in the last few years when I have had time to really hone my craft. I love working in alcohol inks and acrylics and watercolor to create bold, loose, impressionistic works of art."
9. What kind of craft would you like to learn next?
"I have spent a lot of time in recent years crocheting little animals which I sell at crafts fairs. I think I’d like to branch out into crocheting other items like slippers, sweaters, hats, gloves etc. so I will bite the bullet on that!"
10. What's in store for the future?
"I will create new and gorgeous paintings of all manner of birds and animals and put them on pillows to create fabulous new home décor lines. It would be great for these to sell in Target one day!"
