This free pattern is rated Intermediate, so it isn't for the beginner. To make the ornament, you'll need size 10 crochet thread and a size 9 steel crochet hook.
A medium weight yarn in used in the project. Each ball measures 2" in diameter. You could change yarn weights to make bigger or smaller balls. These would be a great way to use up scrap yarn. Make them in many colors and sizes.

Aunt Lydia's Rug yarn was used in this project, but I can't see why you couldn't just use scraps of red worsted weight yarn. This is a vintage pattern from 1952, but is easy to follow.

Mom's Love of Crochet offers a free Christmas tree fan ornament. The fan is crocheted with crochet cotton and a size 3 steel crochet hook.
To complete this project you will need a 3" satin ornament ball. Also used is size 10 gold thread.
You'll need 4-ply worsted weight yarn in white, and green sports weight yarn to complete the project. Of course you can crochet it in the colors you have on hand. A size G hook was used. If you can't find the green sports weight yarn, you can divide the strands of worsted weight and use that. 2 strands of worsted weight equals sports weight.
Mom's Love of Crochet is offering this free pattern which is created with size 10 crochet cotton thread. You'll also need a size 7 crochet hook.
