Steps to Frame Your Cross Stitch

  1. The first thing you need to do is to gently wash your cross stitch piece. Use a gentle soap, hand wash in cool water, and let dry flat. Never, ever wring the water out of it. Let it slowly drip dry.
  2. Now you need to choose a frame. If your piece is modern, choose a modern frame. If it is Victorian, choose a frame that will compliment the cross stitch. Now only do you need to take a look at style but also look at color. There's nothing worse than a frame that clashes with the picture, or in this case, the cross stitch sampler.
  3. Now, decide if you are going to fame with or without matting. When framing without a mat, you should frame without glass. You don't want the stitching to touch glass, it will adhere to it. If framing with matting you will want to use two or three mats. Decide what colors you will be using and how wide you want each mat.
  4. Now that you have decided on the frame and matting you need an accurate measurement so you can have the frame and mats cut to size.
  5. This is the time you will mount your cross stitch piece on a mounting board. You can choose either a flat mounting board or a foam based mounting board. I find a foam matting board adds more depth to the piece. Cut you mounting board to a size that will fit comfortable inside the frame leaving about 1/8" space around all edges.
  6. Center your work on the mounting board and secure it with stainless steel pins. Turn work over onto a clean white towel, carefully stretch Aida cloth over edge securing it with double sided acid free tape.
  7. Now it's time to put it all together. On a clean white towel place fame face down, glass( if you are using it), mats(if using them), mounted cross stitch piece and cardboard cut to fit secure into back of frame. Cut a piece of brown paper, the type used to bag groceries, to fit the back of frame right to the edges. Lay double sided acid free tape , along the outside back of frame, and lay brown paper over it, pressing edges to secure.

Happiness is homemade.

I have shared this excellent hub, KKGals with my cross-stitching friend who loves to cross stitch. In fact you have to move around constantly when you visit her or she will turn you into a cross stitched item. Really!

hawaiiodysseus, who know, you might become the next great cross stitcher. Stranger things have happened. Afterall, it's my understanding that Rosie Greer would needlepoint to relax.

kidscrafts, I've found out the same thing you have. People don't like to use them because they are afraid they will sully them. I once cross stitched a sirt for a friends daughter. She never got to wear it. He mom thought she would get it dirty.

      Hi, KoffeeKlatch Gals!

Every now and then, I challenge myself to get out of my comfort zone and try something new. A couple of friends showed me, for example, their fly tying creations years ago. I thought at the time, wow, I could never do that! But, sonofagun, within a decade, I was tying and selling thousands of fishing flies all over the world.

Similar thoughts came to mind just now as I read your lovely hub. Who knows? Stranger things have happened! LOL!

Thank you for sharing, KKG! Have a beautiful day, and know that you are very much appreciated!
