History of Sending Valentines

The history of giving and receiving Valentine's Day cards or notes began in the early 1400s in commemoration of Saint Valentine, the patron saint of love. By the 1700s, they had become popular in America due to English "writers" or books that contained love verses and messages which were written on special paper and given to loved ones. And by the 1900s, with help of the US postal service, sending and receiving Valentines had reached its highest popularity in the United States, with more than 200 million people taking part in the custom.
