A collection of beautiful and original Christmas ornament patterns designed to be cut from 1/8” or 1/4” wood of choice. I usually use Baltic Birch plywood for my ornaments, but they look great in any wood variety. These patterns consist of Moonscapes, Candy Canes and several Christmas Stars, classic round, ball shaped ornaments than are perfect for cutting in 1/8” up to 1/2” wood. I like to use 1/2” wooden ornaments as a standalone decoration using a single ornament stand. The free pattern for the ornament stand is also included in this group. I have also Included a wonderful set of musical instrument Christmas ornament patterns that can be stack-cut for more productivity. This collection of 28 free scroll saw Christmas ornament patterns are perfect for jump-starting your creativity this holiday season. Hand-made Christmas ornaments also make nice gift ideas for family and friends. Get your free scroll saw Christmas patterns by clicking the link below.

How to Finish Your Scroll Saw Christmas Ornaments

Finishing woodcraft projects is often one of the most time-consuming and least thought about processes. However, a good finish is what really makes your hard work shine and gives a strong sense of accomplishment and satisfaction in a job well done. A good finish also preserves your work for a longer period of time offering years of enjoyment.

Once your Christmas ornaments are cut out, begin sanding them with a very fine grade of sandpaper. I find that using small strips of sand paper are excellent for slipping through inside cut and cleaning up the fuzzies left behind by your scroll saw blade. After sanding, wipe the pieces down with a damp cloth to remove the dust and make sure the surface is clean and dry.

These ornaments can either be painted or stained, depending on your taste. I have always been a fan of staining and that is what I do most often, but if you want more vibrant colors, then I suggest using acrylic paints. Apply your stain (following the manufacturer’s directions) or paint of choice and allow it to dry completely.

Another option is to use any of the available staining oils such as walnut, tiki, lemon, natural and so forth. The advantage of using oil is the preservation of the wood, as the wood will not dry out and begin to decay and crack. The down side is that oils take a little longer to dry, and some, like lemon oil, never completely dry and require a shellac or sealant to reduce unwanted leakage of the oil.

The final step is to apply liberal amount of gloss or satin finish to your Christmas ornaments. I love the glossy look, so I apply several coats of Krylon Clear Gloss finish to achieve the look I want. The secret is to not apply too much at one time which can lead to dripping and running of the finish. A quick spray from about 6 to 8 inches followed by about 10 minutes of drying time between coats has worked well for me. There are many brands of shellacs, polyurethanes and glosses available, but the Krylon is cheap and does just as good of a job as any of the higher end products I’ve tried.

Thank you Rebecca, I'm glad you like them! They are a lot of fun to design. Every year at Christmas I would design one for each of our kids and as a family tradition we would spend an evening painting and decorating them. My wife also loves to give sets of them to neighbors and friends every year.
