How I Created My Cool House For Free - Using GIMP
I started a new project with a Width of 3000 and a height of 1500. If I zoom in by 33.3%, I find it sits nicely on the canvas and offers the maximum of coverage, i.e. it's the perfect dimension for this particular project.
The idea I had in my head as far as the design for my house was, I wanted a house that sits slightly elevated, has a one car garage and is two stories high. I then set up guides to make a reference of the fundamental areas of the house. As I mentioned a few Hubs back, I'm a firm believer in GIMP's guides!
Now, I got the basic foundation for the house laid out.
I filled the house itself with the hex color 8f8b7a. Then, I created the roof and filled it with 1e1a1a. After that, I started on the roof shingles (if you want to call them that) by first stroking a path with a color slightly darker than the color of the roof from one end to the other, horizontally.
And after that, vertically, at an angle to give the roof the illusion that it is "pitched" like a teepee.
I extended the front of the house where I will include the garage and front main entrance to the house. I also added the roof for this extension.
I then saved my image as a JPEG, so I could clean up a little bit using the Eraser Tool. I also added some touch-ups to some edges to add a shadow effect.
At this point in time, I got the garage door completed along with the front door. I built a stone wall between the garage and main entrance with a molding to enhance the style. I will be incorporating this style throughout the entire project.
Since my last creation update, I added an extension to my house in the form of an upstairs bedroom. Then, I added some windows to bring in the light - to include a colorful stain glass window. Now, I also threw in some more brick work to help decorate my house and give it some flair.
On the final features of my house, I added a carport, entrance walkway - all constructed of cement - and, who couldn't resist, a small lawn to keep the family terrier happy and the doggie pickup bag full. So, who's says the market is too expensive these days to own a house? Here you go!
