How I Created My Spooky House Using GIMP

Updated on February 11, 2015

Spooky House

First of all, I created a new layer and named it Foundation. After that, I drew the basic outline of my house using the Pencil Tool.

My technique for drawing this house was: I started from the top of the house and worked my way down. After having drawn the house's basic outline, I created a new layer and named it Upper front room. Once again, I used the Pencil Tool to draw out this room's outline, but I used the base color of that particular part of the house to draw it - 9d998d - and then I painted it.

In the creation of the upper front room, I began adding the side planks of the house and then I filled them with a texture from an old house that I made.

At this point, I have the upper room finished.

I am using the hex color 939c99 to fill in the side planks and then I use a combination of 7f8684 and 727976 to give them an old wood look. As you can see from the upper bedroom, I filled the windows with the color ffae2c and then applied a little Gaussian Blur so it would appear as though the room has mysterious occupants. Next to the upper room, I created a cone shape with a section of rooms.

And, as you can see, at this point, I have turned off visibility for the Background layer. I won't be needing it when I am finished with my image and I prefer not working with it.

As you can see from the image above, the house is coming along quite nicely - for being the work of an amateur. I managed to complete all of the upper half and I am now working my way down to the porch. I went back to some areas, namely, the area below the cone shape. What is actually a water tank. In this region, I used GIMP's Eraser Tool to carve out some areas of corrosion to give it an old worn out appearance.

You may see sections with gaps between elements. I will be filling these sections during the final phase of my project - to include final touch ups.

Almost finished
Almost finished

As you can see from the image above, my spooky house is almost finished. I've come a long ways since the last Hub entry.I've gotten the upper house, lower house, back side and the porch finished - to include all the windows and doors. Of course, my way of creating a spooky house may be a little cumbersome and time consuming. But I'm hoping it's the idea that counts. I will continue defining and detailing my house and then report back here after I have completely finished.

so, the final image is now complete:

I have made all the final touches. That includes, the vines growing up the porch area and chimney giving it a deserted, old abandoned feel. I have touched up some areas with some different shades of grey to give the wood a worn out appearance. My work is done here and I hope you enjoyed!

Hi, Daniel. I sure envy guys like you who are good at image designing. The problem with me is that I write, but am poor at layout design.

Back in my years as a journalist/editor, I had to rely on a layout artist to design the pages of our publication.

Well...I guess it's never too late. This GIMP sure looks like fun.

      Thanks for sharing!

Yeah, actually GIMP is very easy to learn. I am sure it won't take you anytime to learn what you need to know. And let me just say, I am just a novice when it comes to image design.
