How to Draw a Skull Tattoo

Skull tattoo concept drawing by Wayne Tully, 2010.

I have been drawing skull tattoos for a while now, and the range of different designs still impresses me. Here, we will go over some different ways to draw a skull tattoo. Along with my tutorial, you'll find four easy-to-follow drawing videos.

Your drawing will start off with a quick sketch. This will be the foundation of your idea. Getting this first step right is the secret to a good final result, so watch the first video and see how I approach the drawing.

Draft Sketching

Adding More Defined Pencil Lines

By working through and building up your ordered pencil lines, you are developing your drawing from an initial draft sketch. This is the best thing you can do, because developing concepts always starts out this way. Sometimes you fail, but most often you succeed in bringing your ideas to life.

Watch the second video below to see how the skull sketch is coming along. Apply this to what you see in your own drawings.

Adding Details

The skull should now be taking shape. To make the sketch into a tattoo design, add details around the skull. I've added fire and blood and then some funky tribal spikes at the back of the skull, which turned out to look like a punk rocker hair style.

Don't worry if these elements don't appeal to you. I've just thrown them in there. Make your drawing your own!

Watch the third video to see how the sketch develops.

Inking the Drawing

Inking can take time. That's why I just loosely ink-sketched this drawing. I recommend you to take your time with your design if you want to add it to a flash sheet series, because tattoos should look clear and professional, with colour too. I've done this one quickly to give you the inspiration to draw your own. Watch this final video to see the pencil sketch get a final inking-in.

Sure Cindy, it was a Roseart Greatgrip mechanical pencil, I find myself drawing with these a lot, because I hate sharpening the pencils on normal sketch pencils!

And the ink pen was just some really cheap gel ink pen that had no manufacturer name because it was so cheap!!

      Cheers now!

      Cheers bam bam!

It takes all practice and lots of sketching to get it right, that's why I locked myself in a room for 4 years to practice, I only came out when I could smell a Christmas Dinner!
