How To Make A Mandala - Kaleidoscopes For Artists

Updated on October 16, 2013

Want to learn how to make a mandala? We’ll show you how to do this both online and by using paper. A mandala is also known as a “Kaleidoscope” and you’ll see many in India. These beautiful works of art are the favorites of many because of their beautiful colors. Every mandala is different and the originality of them is also something that people like. If you’ve ever had Kaleidoscope binoculars as a kid, you know how lovely these mandalas look - especially on paper.

You are probably here because you want to learn how to make mandalas, right? Here are some tutorials you can use to make them. Remember that you have the option of creating them online which is the easiest and not as time consuming. You could create your own mandala in as little as five minutes or even take up to two hours creating one. It depends on which route you want to take. For example, I use Paint.net now instead of creating Mandalas on a piece of canvas paper. It’s less messy and I am able to make a whole set of Kaleidoscopes.

How create a mandala online

Making a Mandala online is incredibly easy. Anyone can do it, even if they don’t have design skills. You don’t even have to be an artist to make a Mandala online! Here is a tutorial on how to do it:

  • Get a copy of Paint.net. Don’t worry - it is a free program that is available to the public. You’ll need to download and install the program onto your computer.

  • Make sure you download the “Kaleidoscope” plugin . You can usually find the download link on the forums or just by downloading their full plugin set - this way you will have all the plugins.

  • Now that you have done that, open up Paint.net

  • Take any image of your choice online. If you want a black and white Mandala, choose a design online that has a white background.

  • Go to the Paint.net menu bar and select “Effects” then go to “Distort”. Click on the “Kaleidescope”. You can adjust the sliders to get different patterns. Go ahead and play with it.

  • That’s all there is to it! You see, wasn’t that easy?

How to make mandalas on paper

Making mandalas on paper can be done with paints. Well, this is the easiest way instead of having to sketch a Mandala. Relying on rulers to create a Mandala takes such a long time and you could spend two hours or even the whole day creating your Mandala. Look at the video to the video below if you want to learn how to create it on paper. Just make sure you have a few paints to do this, preferably acrylic.

Finding Mandalas to color

If you want to find mandalas to color, the best route would be to make your own online, using Paint.net. We’ve already given you a tutorial for this so all you will need to do when finished is print them out. This is great if your kids are bored and want to color something. You can also print mandalas out to use in jewelry designs or even in your own artwork.
