How To Make A Native American Beaded Headdress With Safety Pins
Beaded safety pin headdresses are fun and easy to make. These beautiful headdresses can be used as decoration in a car by hanging them over the rear view mirror or in the home with other Native American décor. They are popular items that are often found for sale at trade shows, craft fairs and powwows.
- 10 2-inch safety pins
- 11 6mm round faceted acrylic beads
- 33 8mm round faceted acrylic beads
- 12 spaghetti beads
- 15 inches of 20-gauge crafting wire
- Round nose or needle nose pliers
- 12 Feathers
- 8 inches of 1/8 inch ribbon
- Craft glue
Cut a 4-inch length of 20 gauge crafting wire. With a pair of round nose pliers, curl one end of the wire into a small circle.
Add an 8mm round faceted bead, a spaghetti bead and another 8mm bead to each safety pin and close.
Slide a 6mm round faceted bead onto the wire and slide the bottom ring of a safety pin on next. Making sure all safety pin openings are facing the same direction, continue this process until all safety pins have been added. Add the last 6mm bead to the wire and with the round nose pliers, curl the end of the wire into a circle.
Cut a 5-inch length of wire and with the pliers curl one end into a small circle. Slide an 8mm bead onto the wire. Push the wire through the opening at the top of the safety pin. Continue alternating 8mm beads and safety pins until all pins have been threaded through the wire, finishing with an 8mm bead at the end. Curl the end of the wire with the pliers. Bend the wires into the headdress shape.
Cut two 2 1/4 inch pieces of 20-gauge wire. With the pliers, curl one end of each wire and loop it through the loops made at each end of the headdress and close. Slide an 8mm bead, a spaghetti bead, and another 8mm bead onto each wire and loop the ends to close.
Place feathers in the ends of each bead at the top of the safety pins and glue in place. Glue a feather in the bottom bead of each dangling sidepiece. Allow to dry. Slide an 8-inch piece of 1/8 inch ribbon around the center safety pin and tie off for hanging.
You can substitute beads, just remember to add smaller beads at the front and larger beads at the top so that the headdress shape will form correctly.
